Im a bit unhappy:whistling: When i did a manual conversion recently, i bought a complete new clutch kit. I noticed a slight clutch release bearing noise, which surprised me as it was brand new. It obviously has gradually got worse and i find when i come to a stop, im keeping the clutch in to stop the whirring noise as its so annoying.

 

I wonder if i can get to it through the fork gaitor and spray some lithium grease or similar into the bearing or is it shot?

I dont really fancy having to get the box off unless i really have too.

I think your going to have to drop the box and have a look mate. You could try spraying some grease through the fork hole but be careful you don't get it into the clutch plates, obviously.

I had a feeling it would, just annoying as it was brand new, what a bummer, you would think buying new oem parts would last more than a couple of months.

Could be that the clutch pedal travel/disengage point was set incorrectly? sounds to me like the release bearing was constantly in contact to me. may have been the cause for the premature failure?

Think you guys have missed the point, the noise stops when the pedal is depressed, this is when the bearing is under load, what has stopped spinning is the first motion shaft into the gearbox, the noise therefore is the gearbox bearing, a common problem on many cars, some manufacturers even suggest a small amount of noise at idle from the first motion shaft bearing is acceptable.

i was about to say something along them lines!!! not as technical but i know a rover i had once had a noisey thrust bearing well so i thought. Changed the clutch still the same. Turned out to be the main shaft bearing in the gearbox.

Its a little bit more than a small noise, im almost hearing a clatter/rattle sound.

Would that mean gearbox apart to get to it? also when cold first to second is a little clunky, but thats a usual zed trait, fine when warm.

Yes your just confirming the diagnosis matey, do you know what mileage was on the gearbox?

I bought the box from Pyronut, previously bassologist on the forum about 3 years ago, but only fitted a week before JAE, so unsure on the mileage.

I will get some tomorrow and see if it helps, if not then box out i guess, ive not stripped a grearbox before so will have it to look forward too, not lol

 

What treatment would you suggest getting?
