Could do it if I had my ramps and tools as have scrounged a 4pk1038 belt from a garage at the services. But the guy goes home at 9 and I don't want to leave her unattended!!

Easy to say I know but see if there is a kerb edge and drive the car up on to it carefully to get some room underneath then just cut the air con and power steering belt off and fit the alternator belt, the aircon you dont need at the moment, the steering will be hard but you should be able to get home at least.

Cheers jeff! No tools is my PITA! Will 91 miles with no PS balls anything up? Normally in my derver but she's laid up with 2 leaking injectors!

with the alternator belt gone, all it does is charge the battery while your driving, and lights etc.. turn off anything you dont need. stereo interior fan etc.

if the battery is is good order, should be enough to turn to fire it. get it home and the battery will drain with the lights but it might be enough to get you back to base.

Geoff you are a legend! Just got back 20 mins ago and had a cuppa.... I had to do the job myself with the guys tools, this was after bodge fixing a transit clutch pedal with him first on the other side of the car park as he was faffing for an hour and I spotted the van after calling Rac again! Note to self. Always carry some extra tools when you switch cars! Cheers also to Stu who called me.

That top mechanic award is for yourself I assume?!! Without that bit of out of the box thinking I'd have been going back up again tonight to rescue it!

Hi guys,

My Z has started to make that typical fan belt slipping sound (mostly when starting the car and setting off) so looks like I will probably need to get this replaced.

Is there a way of confirming it's definitely the belt?

Is this something a typical garage can do and how big is the job compared to a normal car?

Also, where's the best place to get a new belt?

All advice much appreciated.
