As everyone seems to be pushed into diesels for commuting/daily driving what options are there in the RWD department apart from BMW's?

I don't think I'll ever shift back to FWD its pants lol so need more ideas of anything that is diesel and steers from the rear!

Bmw's , Mercedes, Vauxhall omega, Chrysler's are your RWD Diesel choices.

Me too, always favoured the 5 series over the 3 series. They are better cars, but the 3series is a more popular choice.

Pretty limited, BMW's, Mercs, Lexus is about it. Only others are pickups etc.

Love my rwd diesel, and do about 1000miles a week in it.

Mine is a 2002 which has now racked up almost 160K. Cheap to buy now, need very little servicing (cam chain not cam belt!) and still does 40MPG.

Had a 2.2 dti omega (manual) and that was nice to drive but no run to the rear end, was like a sloth on wheels!!

 

Got a 3.1 trooper, which you can kick the tail on but its a heavy old beast once its sideways! Only d (auto) does about 20 to 25 mpg so not economical either!!

Bmw all the way. 320d if you want to save some money.

I had a Renault Clio 1.5 which was a Diesel, lol

I had the 2.5td Omega, but the e36 3 series has the same engine and weighs nearly a ton less. I'd still have another Omega though, was quite happy going sideways, infact, i learnt to oversteer/powerslide in the ol' Omega. Only managed 30mpg on the downside.

 

Looking at prices on t'net I'd say you'd be mad not to go for a bimmer. Or perhaps a merc c-class?

Stick with the Germans - BMW or Mercedes. And that is all.....

 

.....Personally I have no desire for a diesel; but back in 2008 when my last SLK was being repaired following an accident, I was given a brand new E320CDI for about 2 months to use and abuse.....

you will be proper impressed with a 330D full power from 1200rpm all they way to abour 5000rpm.

 

Not like the other diesels where they only have about 1500rpm power band lol!!

330D - E46 (1999–2005) , E90 (2005–2011)

530D - E39 (1997–2003) , E60 (2003–2010)

 

Depending on Budget.

 

The Bmw 3.0D is a fantastic engine. Drives and sounds much more like a Performance petrol than a typical Diesel. About 200hp, 300+ Ib/ft Torque.

I have the 530d Msport and it frustrates me to bits, car is always in control so have to turn the traction control off... Wish I had the skills to drive it properly with it switched off though..:biggrin:

I Forgot about the Lexus (IS & GS). A more unique option, but not really in the same league. They have that cheap plastic feel and not as good drivers cars.

I have a lexus is200 mine is the petrol so not sure how the diesel would be but it's a great car to drive

IIRC the only oil burning Lexi is the is220d which is 175bhp at best? Hopeless lets me honest.

 

If you compare the BMW to the Merc diesels almost always the BMW will be faster and better on juice!

I wouldnt go for an E36 325tds an old engine now, not particularly powerful or that great on juice.

Early E46 320d not brilliant either, 136bhp and not so reliable, a couple of years into the E46 it was replaced with a 150bhp unit which was far better.

 

The E90 320d (318 and 316 use the same engine but detuned) started of at 163bhp and later replaced with a 177bhp version of the same engine. Obviously the more modern the higher the price, but it depends what you were looking at?

 

Early E39 5 series 530d / E46 330d came with with the 3.0 (2.9 actually but there we go) 184bhp engine later upgraded to 204bhp, E39 had that till death in 2003. E60 5 series introduced a 218 (ish) bhp engine as did the e90 330d. Later increased to 230/35bhp but again later models = more money.

 

Obviously the ultimate oil burner is the 335/535d 272bhp later 286bhp twin turbo 3.0 - fab!
