we cant put our little girl in the front as she pulls the button that looks like a window switch. this is fine but the handbrake comes on even when your going along at any speed !

and no its not a fault thats how they are there is no inhibitor to stop it happening :hammer:

and obviously a big problem http://www.cararticles.co.uk/uk-vauxhall-hit-by-renewed-faulty-handbrake-alarm.html

We use EPB's on Mercedes - while the vehicle is moving it actually applies the service brake & not the parking brake for a secondary emergency brake.

It only operates for as long as you press the switch.

I would have assumed that most other manufacturers used a similar principle but dont know for sure?!

is there a speed it wont work at ? tbh i think it applies all brakes but havent tested it but it sure scares the crap out of you if you pull it by mistake lol

no - on the Mercs it works at any speed - vehicles need a secondary emergency brake in case your pedal falls off or something! LOL!

On our cars it brakes slowly at first & only applies probably around 25% max braking effort

It's the same on my Insignia. Mine operates on all 4 wheels and does engage the ABS too so not too good for handbrake assisted turning either.

Don't know whether it releases when you let go of the button, will have to give it a try later and see

trouble is my little girl can reach it from her car seat in the front ! and my missis puts it on by accident thinking its the electric window switch when she is sat in passenger seat lol

I hired a new VW passat that had that, while moving if the operated the switch the rear brakes would apply quite hard but the release themselves again, as it must have realised the car is still in motion, and could do it at any speed, it was quite violent as well, wouldnt do it on me own car...lol

VW passat

Sounds dangerous to me :hammer:

A colleague of mine recently moved to Canada and he had a VW Passat with one of these 'handbrakes', it was only a few years old and he had no end of trouble with it

Just before he put it up for sale the handbrake solenoid jobby siezed and he had to take it to a VW dealership to get sorted

None in stock so they temporarily fitted a 'used' one (cost him £340 fitted) then he had to return to get the ordered part fitted a week later and they charged him the same price? so another £340 out of pocket

He only got £3700 for the car having just forked out £680 on a poxy solenoid!

Very bad design in my opinion.....I never could figure out how you're supposed to carry out hill starts??? is there a special 'hold' button or something?

Ive got an Insignia as well and if your on a hill with the handbrake on and you rev past 2500rpm with the clutch in the handbrake turns off and you roll backwards. If you engage the hand brake at any speed it engages then makes one hell of a bang then disengages, cant get it to handbrake turn though.

That article is about cable based handbrakes on the corsa, signum and vectra models...

I can see how it would be a problem, I was always under the impression that the electric handbrakes just didnt work when you were moving about a certain speed. But of course I suppose you need to have a suplimentry brake incase of total brake failure. Although with a dual circuit brake system thats quite unlikely!

I suppose the problem is the location of the button, dads seven has an electric handbrake, but the release button is to the right of the steering wheel IIRC and so can only be reached by the driver.

whats wrong with the good old cables that have been used forever???

yea - and while were at it lets go back to manual windows, manual seats, points & condensor, carbs etc etc etc

lets stop progression NOW!!

would be far easier for me anyway!! bloody networked CAN systems, LIN bus systems, having to check for PWM signals with a scope rather than just using a good old test light.

In fact lets go back to a horse & cart!

:whistling::lol:

No thats just Stupid duh!! :tt2:

I dont rate electric seat eaither. pointless
