Sorry if this is a real thickey question, but when you see all this stuff about polished and ported heads etc. what does it mean?

I know what the advantage is, better air flow etc. But how is this process applied and is it something you can do yourself with a dremmel-multi and a polishing connection...LOL!!!

uummhhhhmmmm i dotn know any technical terms lol

i used to polish and port the heads on all my old escort 2l overhead cams they were a doddle to do and it was just a case of getting the fine grinder and heavy wire wool on the case.it does make a big improvement the theory behinh it being the gases and such are not hindered by any burrs on the cast block feeing up the airflow and such but there's not a prayer i would ever attempt it on a z for a start the can you imagine the hassle involved in taking the heads off..........the days of me getting my hands dirty under a bonnet are long gone unless johnny decides his engine bay needs a clean again lol

Airflow is a really complex subject. Sometimes adding material to decrease the radius of a bend in a port increases airflow.

If you polish the wrong part of the port the fuel sticks to it.

I somehow doubt that Nissan didn't bother putting any effort into getting it right in the first place.

Having said all that if you Z is being modded as heavily as you keep saying then it is a pretty standard upgrade path. It might make the difference between 550 and 580 BHP!!
