I'm fancying a 540i as a tip runner/fast cruiser/stop gap etc has anyone had one and any good/bad experience with it? I know the common issues with cooling etc and the usual typical E39 stuff...

All input welcome chaps!

Yeh, jeff has one.

I've not had a 540i, but did run a E39 until recently. Absolutely love it, brilliant car and can fully understand the "best car in the world" accolades it received during its production.

I will have another one, and it will be the 530D

I'm just about to put a e39 535 up for sale

Sadly im really after a touring... and as E39 fans will know there was no 535i as a touring, shame really! Still what sort of age/miles/spec price are you looking at mate? Im not adverse to the idea of a 535 (its really a v8 I want!)

Aye you had a 520i didnt you? I'm from a family of BMW's and ive had a couple, infact we have an E39 523i touring atm which is my mums. I was rather hoping as its getting old and a bit tatty dad would be up for replacing it and let me have it/run it for the time I need it but hes not going to go for that I think. I know thats foibles, however its had some abuse at the hands of my mother has that car. Poor thing, it was absolutly imacculate when it arrived, 60k on the clock and 4 years old it was cleaner than dads 745i which he had 9k on the clock and 12 months old! Yet now its just a dog, not a straight/unmarked panel on the poor old girl!

Ive had one. Great car, i'll agree its the best car in the world.

Loads of power, comfort, looks. 20mpg around town i got. 30ish on a run.

I had an e34 540i too, not as nice but still cool.

And a 530i sport. Needs a V8! 4.4 not 4.0.

It's a 1997 with coincidently 97,000 miles on it.

If you want any further info let me know and i'll send you the ad and pics

had a 535 saloon and a 540 touring, both great cars. I'd stick with the 540 as it's got more power but mpg is very similar.

Fantastic car all round though did notice that the touring was not as stiff as the saloon so would shake if you caught a bump mid corner.

Yeah I can imagine, its the space im after to be honest. I think the touring is still one of the best looking estates around. Especially for my limited buget! Glad to hear they were good! Cheers

Out of interest Jaffa, what sort of mpg would you average on typical long (motorway) run ?

i was looking at a 530d before i bought the zed and read a bit about the auto gearbox's losing reverse and cost £800+ to sort out. Also the auto box's are meant to be sealed for life and changing the gearbox oil is a pain in the arse and expensive i belive.

mid to high twenties which isn't too bad.

As jadfa said I had expected mid 20's on a run. Dad had a 740i which did 24mpg over the 130k miles he had it. He has a 745i and that does 26 to 27 and has for the last 100k or so!

I had a 540i 4.4 e39, absolutely loved it to bits.

Awesome cars. zed TT fast, surprisingly economical and cheap to buy.

never had a moment when I thought it needed more go , especially at low revs

I got a 0-60 of 8.3 seconds, timed by the organizers of a bike racing event, whilst............towing a hayabusa on a trailer :tt2:

The only bad point at all was it was utterly crap in the snow, but hey......the other 362 days of the year were a blast.

My second favourite car ever after the Zed, obviously.

I stupidly sold it when we moved and am now buying another, cos I miss it sooo much
