Probably a dumb question but why do the rear sill sections on the 300 ZX cause so many of us problems with Rot, whats the cause and how can it be prevented

any ideas

Simple really, the targas drain down though here eventually the drain ****s up rots out and begins pouring water into the sill. Then if you take a look at the rear wheel well you will notice a, little shelf where dirt and salt collect from the tyres spray. How can you prevent it? Keep the underside clean and wax oiled and keep an eye on the drains. Sadly if the car gets wet often its inevitable really its just a case of how long

Bare-shell strip down, acid bath followed by treatment and protective dips. Then wheels up rebuild, dry use only and stored in a temperature controlled dehumidifying tent in a garage.

Or Jeff will Waxoyl (or something similar) it for about 80 quid. Its a tough choice.

just finishing a big shell overhaul, the sills etc looked good from the outside, but a different case once you peal back the outer skin.

my targa drains were all still intact, the obvious problem is the factory wax protection. where wax has been applied the panels are perfect but as the rear sill section are very complex (up to 5 layers in places) the factory wax has missed and the metal dissolves.

if they are still good inside (WHICH I DOUBT) then some more wax will do the job.

the sill areas are always going to be exposed to moisture and with no real airflow through them they are a perfect breading ground for rust, once it sets in little will stop it.

have a look at redwines rebuild thread for a good idea of how much it will spread

Gotta agree with Dougal on the rust issue. Everybody seems to blame the targa drains.

Whilst mine were pretty rusty on the outside the insides were spotless and a quick test showed they werent leaking.

I think the problem is more a build up of condensation on the unprotected panels, a decent coat of paint at the factory and we wouldnt have half the problems.

Love this build mate. is it still going ahead. the e46 wings are a fantastic touch

thanks mate

its been a bit side tracked by the 300 tbh

i was only intending to do a bit of a tart up, which has turned into a reshell and concourse restoration as these things do.

the e46 are going all round, front wings are done and the n/s quater panel. i was half tempted to do it to the 300 but i dont think it would suit the style.

priority is the 300 though which i hope to have done for next years show season. might take a bit of time off from car building then and maybe back onto the 200 in the winter
