Engine Knocking.

I am no closer to knowing what the noise is in my engine so Im gonna ask you lot again.

Its like a ticking but louder, almost a knocking, in rythem to what tappets would sound like. It comes and goes and is only coming from one side of the engine.

It really happenes at about 1500rpm. It was first noticed when I was reversing and I let the clutch in to slow down and as the revs dropped to about 1500 it could be heard and it went by the time the engine was ticking over.

Most of the time its not there but every now and then I can hear it when I am stopped at traffic lights and now its starting to do it at tick over every now and then.

Any one have any ideas of what it could be. I have enough oil in but the pressure gauge is going up and down all over the place.

Please help.

CheerZ Andy,

I have been told by a guy who is a VERY good mechanic and used to work for Nissan and he said the same thing. he said Nissan have always have had that problem. What do you suggest? Change the oil again, only did it 1,000 mile ago, but run some good flushing oil through?

Stuart

I know its a pain but you might have to change all your tappets or at least one side cos theres not much chance of pinpointing which one it is. Changing the oil is again is unlikely to stop it sticking.

A cup of ATF fluid might sort it bud! wink.gif

I would do. But it doesnt do it every time. It may not do it for a week now, but then do it for a few days all the time. I have not heard it for a few days at the moment, but as soon as it starts doing it again, I'll take you up.

About ten years ago I had an old Supra 2.8i..had the very same problem. Had a mechanic strip the whole lot down, take out the tappets and soaked them in parafin and stuff. Cleared through all the oil veins ( the guy who had it before must have been a complete ass and never changed the oil). Put it back together..worked for about a day. In the end after several more flushes and rebuilds I decided to take the plunge and HAD to replace ALL 12 tappets..very expensive. Still hope you get lucky if it is the tappets...

Cheers Stuart.

Take that into consideration. The engine has been looked after well. Its done more than 150,000 miles and this is the only problem the engine has had. What was the aproximate cost of the work? So I can have an idea.
