So i have removed the front shocks from my tt that had really bad tyre wear which I thought to be camber from sagging front springs,

Now that I have them out is there a way to check for this? What should the springs measure or should I get new springs to be sure

Also how do I bench test the dampers? There is resistance as they go up and down, but once pushed right down the don't come back up again? Is this ok or do i also need to change the dampers?

The springs will have a pre-defined length, therefore check in the manual. If they are short them you know they've taken a set.

The dampers will not return to their fully extended length unless there is a spring attached to them.

As everyone else as said if you push the shock right down and it dont come straight back up, their :censored:.

Sometimes they are a bit moist around the top under dust cover, where they have leaked.

I would buy new shocks and use old springs if they look in good enough condition,

Or if funds allow new shocks and springs,

And would have thought if you aint changed the rears they will be just as bad or worse so would change all 4.

Maybe them meister r ones, i would have thought they would be a similar price to standard shocks and springs all round.

Or kyb shocks and eibach springs.

but they should extend.

not all the time they dont. Fto ones i have had, mr2 ones and vectra ones dont, and ive had them all from new

They should definetly come back up on a zed, and other cars never seen one that dont and fit shocks a lot.

In my opinion thats the main point of them so when you hit a bump they push straight out to bring the car back to its natraul position,

dont know about the zed tbh. A shocker will never have enough force to lift a car, thats the job of the spring. Its a damper just there to make the ride more comforable.

lol ment when it comes back up with spring it will settle at the top where the shock should raise too.

Whenever i have had them not returning to the top the car seems to bounce more then once.

Yeah thats right lol!!!! with the shock returning you on about the rebound. so cars like vauxhalls and fords etc will have little rebound. so the shocker will not raise up on its own. Well it will but very very slowly lol!!!!

anything sporty will have a greater rebound i should imagen :)

Thanks guys,

had a good look at them today, pushed them right down and nope they didnt come back up at all, so i take it there ruined

spring lenght good idea i will check the manual what the size should be hopefully they will be in spec,

unfortunatley i have a step up to my driveway so i cant fit anything but stock size on mine, would have loved to lower it though but the thought of smashing my strosek bumper everytime i come home puts me off LOL!!

i will have a look what meister r has to offer

A shock will only extend by itself if it's is pressurised. The reason for pressurisation is to reduce the formation of gas bubbles. It is not intended to lift the vehicle in any way. Not all shocks are pressurised either.

Different shocks act differently, gas filled struts normally self extend due to being pressurised, shocks that are solely hydraulic might not.

Not sure what are fitted to the Z, i changed mine a couple of years ago whith standard nissan shocks and for the life of me cant remember whether they self extended.

Is the resistance to pull the rod out similar to that when pushing it in, if so then the shocks are probably still doing the job, if it pulls out easily even for only a small section then chances are they are knacked.

Im going by what Jaimie at zedworld told me, that if you push them right in they should creep out slowly, mine hasnt moved out in 3 days now LOL!!

as for movement there is even resistance up and down but they are 21 year old shocks so a bit fresher ones wouldnt go a miss i was thinking

There should be resistance up and down, that's what dampers are designed to do. The resistance is to stop the car "pogoing"down the road after you've hit a bump.
