You know how it is when a mate has his nose put out of joint and you really struggle to stop yourself from laughing your arse off, well I had one of those moments today

A month or so back a mate of mine jumped in the shortie' for a lift, so naturally I let him witness a bit off SWB twin turbo VG power....considering the shortie' is fairly stock, by his own admission, he was impressed!

anyway, a mutual Kiwi friend last December fulfilled his mid life crisis dream of owning a big Aussie V8 by shelling out a fortune on a tidy example of its European cousin, the LS3 powered 6.2ltr VXR8.

Ever since he parted with his hard earned we've all been ripping him about his 'big lardy arsed Vauxhall'.

To be honest it's not my cup of tea but you've got to love the sound of that big old V8, but I'd never let him know that.

well yesterday he offered the same friend a lift in his VXR8 and gave him a demonstration of 6.2 ltr NA V8 power.

He didn't take kindly to being told "Pez's little black car is faster than that"

talk about red rag to a bull!!!

He came to my house for a brew this morning and before the kettle had even boiled, the challenge was set, his VXR8, my shortie, Santa Pod 1/4 mile as soon as possible to settle this once and for all........

well I really struggled not to laugh, nothing to do with the challenge but because he is so serious about it and is genuinely hurt by our friends comment.

I fully respect the power and torque figures of his motor and wouldn't know how the zed would fair but I had to accept just to calm him down

So here we have it, a genuine challenge......VG30DETT vs LS3

I feel that maybe a few tweeks (and some discreet choice goodies') are in order just to give me a fighting chance

this could be interesting!!!!

Lol, ha, ha, good read!! get him spanked, even if you have to nos the shorty, you CANT loose, good luck, make sure its on film ;)

im telling you that shorty is quicker than normal for some reason it felt mighty quick to me maybe get a dyno just to see i was gonna get it done. Ive got a Greddy FMIC you can borrow and a black front bumper to fit it he might not notice

oh ive got a Nos kit as well if you wanna hide that in there capable of delivering a ridiculous amount of power something like a shot of 250 :)

A bit of Googling reveals some stock Vauxhaul times of 13.35 at 109mph.

Can you better that in your "stockish" Z32????

Only time will tell.

Cos as we all know when the flag drops the b.......t stops.

IF you ever get to the Pod:huh:

Out of interest, what figures should a stock Swb Zed achieve?

I am very tempted to sell my zed to get one of those. I think there great machines.

If the zed is stock then then V8 will be well on its way.

about 14.5 iirc :alien:

I figure I've got a couple of weeks tops to get the zed setup, and plan on dropping it up to Greg at Protuner to get it on the dyno

You're right though, I can't lose this one, but have to win fairly or at least appear to win fairly

there are a load of plug and play goodies in my attic (Greddy boost controller/Greddy fmic/AEM EMS/740 injectors etc) but obviously need to keep it realistic (unless anyone knows a way of fitting bigger Garret turbos without having to remove the engine from the car?)

I might even invest in a set of slicks

I'm gonna' rig up several on board cameras and will get some good footage of the event

any advice would be much appreciated fellas

Fastest stock I've seen recorded is 13.8 , but usually around low to mid 14's

Low to mid 13's are capable on Stock turbos with the usual Mods and boost increase......depending on driver and his experience at the Pod.

dont have to many cameras, its more weight lol!!!! dont forget to take out the spare tyre etc

Book yourself in to the Test n Tune day on Sep 4th. You need to learn how to get a quick quarter as a driver.

Yep the VXR8 is pretty quick for a lardy arse!

There's no bullshit coming from me and I reckon that I can read a map so getting to the Pod won't be an issue, but thanks anyway....

well it would be good to see you on the 4th. Bobgenie is booked in for the session. im going with him to assist.

Test n tune days get a fully prepped track but only a limited number of cars allowed so plenty of track time.

Bob wants to get more practise at launching and is getting a line lock fitted, and Im keen to help him with tyre presures etc. I will probably take a pair of Mickey Ts along for him to try.

Are you going to base your race on elapsed times or go "head to head" and first over the line wins???

a good reaction time might win you the day. Depends how good the V8 driver is.

Get some of those wheels, tyre's and launch control from the new GT-R . Made a massive difference to that. lol

He wants a head to head and we both hold exactly the same driving quals as we did most of our courses at the same time. I'll do my damdest to get down to meet up with you guys in September.

This sounds exciting!!

My advise would be:-

Increase power with EBC and injectors ONLY if you can get it set up properly on a rolling road. I take it you are talking about my old greddy FMIC which is way too big for stock tubs and as you are racing from a standing start the bigger intercooler will not get chance to get enough air flowing over it to do its job. It may however, due to its bigger volume give you slightly more lag. However, if you can get some one to let of a CO2 fire extinguisher onto it through the front bumper then you are basically charge cooling your intake. You could just say that it was a precautionary thing as you where having cooling issues!!! I've seen it done up at the pod before.

Reduce weight by swapping out the standard seats for something lighter if you have them from your other car, plus spare wheel, quarter of a tank of fuel, ICE etc.

If you can get some R888's or borrow some slickies from a nice Scotsman then that will deffo help.

A linelock will be handy to heat up the tyres or more to the point lose the water that may have been put down in the burn out lane. If the guy in the vauxhall runs over this and is on wet tyres and you are not, he will just sit and spin in first with the kind of torque he has.

The other thing mate is practice your launches.

Good luck!!

the best way to increase power cheaply and quickly is reduce weight.....or increase his ....chuck a big sack of sand and pig iron in his boot when he's not looking ....shove a 100 shot of Nos on it its a cheap but huge power increase ....once its bought its bought ...dont need to use it all the time ..do you have time to fit a NA diff ...reduces weight and gives mucho quicker acceleration up to 130 ish .....

v8 will cream that 300zx. sorry but it just will. stock vs stock your a dead man.

Just trying to upload pics off my Blackberry that I took today of the zed and the VXR8 side by side

The zed is tiny compared to that thing!

I got a peak at the engine and it's a beast, no doubt about it it's got the zed beat on torque figures

Cheers Andy, yeah it's your old Greddy fmic that I was talking about and I agree....maybe an upsized pair of smic's will help

big old beast the LS3!

my mate reckons about 420-430'ish brake and I'm guessing similar torque figures?

430 bhp vs 275-280bhp........................ LOL dead man, your torque 260-280lb/ft his at least 400lb/ft. not worth the race.
