I have just started up my s14a rebuild project which had really stalled last year due to cash, kids, wife & job etc (not in that order though!!)

It was originally posted on SXOC but they have closed the thread as I am no longer a member?? So I thought of posting it on here with all new pics etc as alot of the stages, processes techniques should interest z32 owners (hopefully)

I have quite quite a few nissans including an s14a (rb25det) a z32 tt auto import, z32 tt uk mannual and a k12 sr160.

Right I thought I should document this conversion as it really was'nt the route for big power (400+) that I was originally going to take.

On the way to the Fast Show on the M1 back in March, my stage 3a sr20det was going nicely but then it started mis firing like a bitch??? On further investigation the timing chain had slipped a couple of teeth.....

I was going down the road of a full SR rebuild but i did'nt have the cash to do it properley in one go! ( DB power stage 3 full rebuld £3k, + rb25 gearbox conversion, fly wheel and clutch £1.2k) So over £4000 which didn't include turbon and injectors.

So I decided to go down the RB25DET route as a good friend of my mine had also lobbed an RB25 into his s14a with pretty good results

I was looking at 430ish bhp from this conversion to get the s14a back up and runnning, but hopefully 500 bhp with a top mount turbo and wastegate???

My s14a before she sh*t her pants!!!

The "newish RB"

It is a series 2 RB25det with 56k on the clock just had the belts chaned and a new water pump before the big old r33 oversteered into a tree.....

Got it for £880 with all the pumps, manifold & turbo etc so things are looking good so far!

Just got the gaskets from OZ!!

MLS 1.3 cometic Head gasket, inlet manifold gasket, throttle body gaskets & manifold gaskets!!!

Just had some new bits delivered and dug some others out of the garage. All to be chucked onto the RB25det over the coming months!

Hi mate,

it was off Ebay USA, will check with company it was and let you know! My mate has the same clutch in an s14a (RB25det) which runs 507bhp and he drives like an ar*e and its still going!!

I wanna see, I would like a 200 one day, especially a mint one like your's. S15?

Sorry to butt in but I got the same clutch for the z from US ebay. I'm going to order a new middle plate (not the pressure plate or flywheel :s) but he wants $59 postage on a $69 part, so put it aside this month.

I also had the same clutch when I had my grey zed converted from auto to manual, clutch was fine, flywheel was bent! :( But of course no one knew until it was all back together so it used to judder the clutch pedal on letting the clutch back in. So Id get it all checked first, other than that the clutch was light and strong :)

Looking a good build mate, I like S14a's a friend of mine had an s14, still with its original sr20det running around 400bhp that another friend of ours built for him, was a nice engine but he was never so hot behind the wheel so a bit of a waste really!

Cheers matey! Lets hope the fly wheel is ok, but wont find out for a while!

The SR20DET is highly tuneable and 400bhp can be achieved with relative ease. The problem being is the gear box which is only good for 350 bhp and do not last long when driven hard around this power band. So you either go down the os giken route or put ab RB25det gear box with the bellhousing conversion plate niether a cheap option which lead me to doing the RB conversion on the s14a.

Right when looking for good power from the RB25det the first thing to do stick a nice thick metal head gasket in!

I went for a MLS Cometic 1.3mm jobbie.

30082010255.jpg

Whilst the engine was out I bolted on the XTD clutch & fly wheel.

30082010258.jpg

As usual when you think everything is running smoothly my mate over torqued stud number 12 when bolting up the manifold with a nice new gasket and snap!!!

30082010256.jpg

30082010257.jpg

So to chear my self up I ditched the STD manifold and sold my TD06 SL20 tubby and bought my self this liitle fella!

10092010298.jpg

A Greddy Trust T67 good enough for 550+bhp with a Trust 46mm external wastegate

10092010299.jpg

I bought the whole turbo kit off a smashed up MR2 turbo. Which I was well chuffed with until i relalised that Greddy turbo's T67 flange limited me to manifolds for the RB! The Greddy manifold was over £1500 which was alittle steep so I managed to find this after seeking advice from Skyline owners club.

28092010471.jpg

Its an OBX "Greddy copy" from USA (made in tawain) with the all important T67 flange and 4 bolt waste gate flange. Most of the RB manifolds have the T3 and Tial flanges.

Bolted it all up to check the fitting and then realised more problems!!!

Had a good look at this in the flesh last night and all I can say is what a build, cant wait to see her in action, gonna be a real credit to you fella.

Cheers Craig, it would be nice to have her up and running for next spring!

With this style manifold the top mount pipe is going to be very far back in the engine bay and with my custom downpipe it was definately gonna be a tight fit as the ABS on the s14 is on top right hand side in the engine bay, Shame they didn't stick it in the boot like on the Zed!

09102010494.jpg

Now before the engine was dumped in I thought I should try and sort the snapped stud out

When I was drilling it out I went in a little to much and drilled right through and hit the cooling channel behind the stud oops....

I cleaned out the hole and filled it with water to see If i had punctured the cooling channel. Luck was on my side for once and the water didn't drip through. I fiiled the hole full of high temp mastic just to be on the safe side.

23092010468.jpg

Now this being my first "retap" I ended up puting an m12 thread in as my m10 thread effort just didnt tighten up enough to hold the stud. This again will lead to more problems down the line......

Cheers mate. When I had the SR20det I ran a DB power big brake kit up front 315mm ebc's, with oem calipers and Red stuff pads and grooved ebay rear discs with Red stuff pads which was ok ish... but this was next on my upgrade list before she dropped her guts down the M1.

I will be putting the z32 rear calipers and discs on later in the build and swap the s14 calipers with alli zed jobbies and a z32 bmc with braided lines all round.

Long term though I would like to go Alcon or AP but thats some way off at the moment!
