End of my tether part II - this time its personal....

As a lot of you know I have a great deal of trouble sleeping. I've tried a lot of the advice given but not had any luck with them. So I thought f'ck it and bought some zopiclone from a known and trusted internet site. I'd managed to get myself addicted to them before but didn't really think I had any choice :crying:

Pills arrived and I thought great I might finally be able to get a decent amount of sleep, rather than the odd restless hour here and there. Anyway I took 1, 7.5mg pill and right enough strated to feel tired, went to bed and spent the entire night wide awake, next night I upped it to 1 and half pills, still no sleep!

Last night I took 2 pills and... the same bloody results except know I feel like a bleedin zombie :cursing:

Really don't know what to do now, don't want to up the dose any more than I have done as they just don't seem to be working :cursing:

really out of ideas now.

mate you need severe epic exercise early on in the night ...about 6-8pm and let nature take its course. Ime a roofer and when i dont work i cant kipp but after a very hard days graft you could rape me with a wheelie bin and i would'nt wake up:blink:

Mate, I too suffer with insomnia. Luckily it's no where near as bad as it used to be. I had chronic insomnia for about 2 years so feel your pain.

I too tried everything, but found it impossible to switch off and still do.

If you don't mind me asking what have you tried so far?

Really hope you find a solution mate, I've struggled sleeping the last 4 nights and thats bad enough! god knows what you must be going through! :(

Znut's got a point - how active are you on a daily basis?

I do a desk job (for the next 6 weeks then no more, woohoo!) and I find I really need the gym/bike ride etc to physically tire me out

If lack of activity isn't an issue and you're on the super duper strength meds and they're still not working, then I suspect its a combination of a poor sleeping habit you can't break and possibly something deeper, that's preventing sleep (stuff on your mind?).

Have you tried things like going to bed at a totally, different bedtime, thus breaking what would be your normal sleep (or lack thereof) cycle? So bed at say, 8pm.

LAck of sleep isn't only just exhausting, your body needs it to regenerate and to function properly. Without adequate sleep, you could be a danger to yourself and others. ITs been suggested that driving without sleep is like driving drunk :scared:

Seriously, please see your GP and get a referral to a specialist -and don't take no for an answer. Find out in advance who or where the local specialist is and ask specifically to be referred there

Hugs

I've tried so much that I've lost count mate;

Exercise, dark room no tv etc, kalms sleep, nytol and loads of other herbal remedies, no caffiene, warm milk, bath, bishop bashing, zopiclone, chlorphenamine, night nurse etc.

I've even tried counting sheep!

I'm seriuosly thinking about taking up wacky baccy again! Can't be any worse than some of the stuff I've tried?

Forgot to say I also suffer from Restless leg syndrome, which doesn't help!

Marc used to suffer with this, as well as severe insomnia when we met. He ended up sleeping almost all day when not at work and then being awake all night. For him though it was mostly due to a big bereavement that just totally turned his world upside down, and the subsequent emotional turmoil. Now we're together and his life is more structured and he is happier, he has an almost normal sleep pattern but it took ages.

His restless legs have resolved now too.

Be careful with weed, having smoked far too much of it as a teen, the side effects are not funny. I had the worst paranoia attack at Glastonbury one year, almost never touched it since

And, dare I suggest it in a forum full of blokes, a w@nk or sex not long before you turn in? Never met a bloke who doesn't wanna sleep afterwards....:winkiss:

Pretty much everything I tried. Is it that you can't "switch off" and your brain effectively won't let you sleep?

It's been suggested to keep a sleep diary. In that, if your mind is working overtime then write down what you are thinking. This is supposed to help you stop thinking about it. If your mind moves on to something else write that down and try to sleep again.

You get the picture....

Even if you only try it for a few nights and it doesn't work at least it will give you an idea as to what is keeping you awake. But you probably already know mate.

The excercise thing can help but can also have the opposite effect unfortunately.

I'm guessing you are at the point where you are tossing and turning and getting more and more wound up with yourself because you want to sleep so desperately and yet still can't. This again makes it worse!!!

I can only offer my sympathy and understanding mate. Unless you have suffered you would not believe how it can ruin your life. It is impossible to understand the effects it has on you.

Get to the doctors like Jane says and insist on seeing a specialist. Don't leave until an appointment has been made. It's a complex thing and there are people who can help. Best of luck.

nothing more soul destroying than not sleeping well...hot bath and read a few chapters of a good book could help too mate

See the "bishop bashing" ref in a previous post lol.

I've tried speaking to the doctors about it and they just put it down to my depression. It's not a physical problem that's stopping me getting to sleep. Trouble is the old saying "I'll sleep on it" doesn't work as no sleep! lol

PS. Used to smoke years ago, so know all about it.

Ok, do you mind if I don't read those posts?!! :scared:

So if you're suffering depression, is that being treated? If not, suggest you talk to a different GP and make a double appointment and go through EVERYTHING. Because the 2 things are in isolation, they are a vicious cycle, one worsens the other and so on and so on.

Any decent GP worth their salt will see this whole situation is having a huge detrimental impact on your life

Did you try the sublingual melatonin ?

tbh mate, I've tried so much stuff I can't remember.

I know what it's like mate, my problem tho is perhaps not I can't sleep, I refuse to, and I don't really do it consciously, if I could live without ever sleeping, I would, and I hate it... All I can think of really, is serious physical exursion, more w@nking, and perhaps (easier said than done) try not to think about trying to get to sleep, and whilst your lay there, never ever look at a clock, that only makes things worse, and no beer for a few hours before bed, although it helps you nod off, you end up having fragmented sleep, which isn't much good the next day... Failing that, I fell asleep in the cinema watching that god awful Britney Spears film 'Crossroads', although I would rather eat my own foot with a spoon whilst watching my Dad 'Bishop Bash' than have to sit through another 30 minutes of that....
