hey folks, just wondering about prices for a 'drive in drive out' manual conversion in Scotland, is there any specialists etc...i wouldn't actually mind buying the parts and doing it myself, could it be done over a weekend etc??? i do like the auto to drive, but not having full control of the gears has started to wear thin very quickly :(

i did see somewhere that did it down south but it was £1200 or something like that, i would deffo prefer a conversion than looking for another manual 300, with the exception of a few blemishes i've managed to pick up a really decent car, the motor seems really well looked after etc...anyway, as mentioned above, any specialist in Scotland and could i do a manual conversion myself, thanks, Ryan :)

That lasted about a week then ;)

I had my first zed converted by a chap called Phil who works at a garage in manchester, Z world do of the shelf conversions I believe (even comes with a warranty IIRC).

There are plenty of threads about it, and as long as you have the time, strength and tools + all the bits and somewhere to work on the car it should be do able.

However, I would have thought that for doing it the first time it would take you more than a weekend but im sure someone will be along who has done one to advise on time scales

£1200 is a good price mate, your looking at around £600 just in parts and that is including a s/h clutch etc.

It is also quite a labour intensive job; Remove your autobox and convertor, change spigot bushes, replace flywheel, install clutch and pressure plate, put gearbox on, fill gearbox with oil, punch out panel in firewall, install brake pedal, connect to vacumm (if needed). Install clutch fluid lines, fill with clutch fluid and bleed Then on top of all that you have to do the wiring and the console for the gearstick.

Takes a bit of time to do that lot.

EDIT: forgot about the front half of the prop as well :)

ooof, i better get saving!!! the car needs some bodywork done but i think i'm just gonna go for the manual conversion first, get it out the way then i can think about the body work :)

Just done mine at a local garage of my mates and we are thinking of doing conversions now!

If whoever wants the conversion done we can do it for the costs of labour !

i.e - after you source a conversion kit with all bits needed.

It took me and my mate three days to do a conversion and I'm thinking at a push

as long as there's no issues we could get it down to just two days.

We're based in Ayrshire - Scotland and my auto was converted my myself and

my mate Gordie who is a local friend and mechanic.

Any interest just PM me.

could be very interested, there is a whole package on ebay at the moment, so how much is 3 days labour then?? i assume you'd give me a fixed price beforehand, i'm only up in Dundee so not the end of the earth away, plus i have mates in Glasgow so i could crash there for a few days :D

I'll speak to Gordie again but reckon £400 !

He's told me £250 for the mechanical bit like taking the autobox out and fitting

in the manual one so its just the cost of my time really over the three days.

He knows plenty about mechanics but zip all about electrics that concern doing

the full conversion but i've done it before and it is really easy; It just can be time

consuming; as i remove the dash which makes life easier to install the clutch

booster and pedals.

If you work out the rough costs then :

Manual Box plus all parts for conversion :- £550 - £600

New transmission fluid plus any gaskets / seals / pipes :- £50 - £100

Labour - £400

Total £1000 - £1100

Getting a quote for £1200 was not bad actually but unless your paying extra

for a warranty on parts would you not rather source your own bits as i did on

here then do it yourself ?

Plenty of good kits available in the forsale section.

Anyways labour on our part would likely be no more than £400 and that would

be split £250 for mechanics and £150 doing pedals, booster, electrics and dash work.

i wouldn't mind giving it a go, just the thought of it's a bit daunting since i've never done it before, and knowing my luck, i'd end up being stuck without car for weeks (it's my daily driver) due to getting stuck with bits :) i'll keep in touch though mate, can deffo see me taking you up on this within the next few months :)

and its do-able in a day on your own:).

i'd have to pretty much do it in my driveway :(

Well I provided all the parts for mine, the place that did it charged me £500 to fit I think, but that was 4 years or so ago. That also included a few bits like an MOT and oil change etc.

Mikey did Roses in a day, on axle stands in our garage. I'm willing to lend him my garage if he wants to do it and quote you a price..... he said he'd never do another after he did his own, then said the same thing again after Roses, but I think he just loves working on Z's that much! :D

well, i'd be a fair bit on petrol from Dundee to Doncaster, but if the price was right, plus, if it only took a day :)

The prices being quoted make interesting reading. And the timescales too. As someone who doesn't have a clue I thought it would take much longer and cost an awful lot more. Very interesting indeed.

given the amount of work that goes into the conversion i think it will be hard to do it cheaper than 400. not a bad price i think.

Considering the amount of work involved, I'd say that's a very good price matey :)

yeah deffo a good price, after reading through a write up about it, it is very labour intensive :(
