Right guys, i need some advice:

I have not been using the zed recently as she was making a slight tapping noise from the top of the engine. I thought it might be sticky lifters so used some Wynns lifter treatment, it got quieter.

I had the hesitation issues so swapped the MAF, she stopped hesitating.

I went out today and took her around the ringroad where i live, and the tapping from before, is now much louder and a bit deeper.

here is a couple of short vids with sound. The noise if definitely coming from the top of the engine, more on the drivers side than the passengers side.

The clips do make it sound a bit worse than it is, but not much worse i might add!

What do you reckon?

There is also a tiny bit of random smoke from the same side of the engine, but when you look down there i can't see where it's coming from and there is a bit of oil so it might just be that burning off?

Oil pressure is all over the place at the moment. I know the gauges are inaccurate, but mine used to be very consistent, and now it is not!

Help please as my rocco is playing up too and it looks as if i'll be cycling to work for the next week, but work is about 10miles away!!

Cheers guys

P

that doesnt sound too good to be honest. does it sound like a midget with a hammer hitting your engine? nvm just heard the other video.

that sounds like bottom ends from the video.

ouch, that does not sound good at all. Really we think that's bearings?

just like my engine knock knock bang bang .. followed by dead engine and oil & engine bits all over the road

certainly sounds like ends mate if it wasnt like this befor it was stood up you could give it an oil and filter change but sounds like damage has been done to be honest

just went out again to check and the noise is not half as bad as earlier?? In fact my mate said "what's wrong with it? Sounds ok to me." And to be honest it really wasn't anything like as noisy as earlier??

Yeah... it sounds a bit like a diesel at idle.

As soon as you rev it the sound is much less noticeable. and over 3000 revs you wouldn't know!

I am losing the will at the moment.... bloody rocco started playing up today as well... needs a new carb or fuel pump we think.

So looks as if i will be biking to work tomorrow.... 20mile round trip...including a cycle home at 10pm! All for a job of which i am being made redundant at the end of August due to funding cuts... Lets hope it doesn't pee it down tomorrow or i might just throw in the towel :helpsmilie::crying::sad:

I would suggest changing the VVT springs, there are 2, one for each intake cam, really easy to replace, the only bugger is having to remove the cam cover, which means top water pipe off to gain access. Mine is just the same at the minute, so i have put new ones in my new engine going in so i dont have to worry in the future.

It sounded pretty sweet the last time i saw you, so i doubt it will be too serious.

Well that gives me a bit of hope Graham, I must say that i would be surprised (and gutted) if it was the bottom end or anything that serious as she has been good as gold so far, and the sound started not too long ago and i thought it was sticky lifters.

Like i said it was nowhere near as noisy as earlier when i checked just now so fingers crossed.

In fact i just listened to those vids again and it sound awful!! that is not a true representation of how it sounds to be honest. Even when it was at it's noisiest earlier on it didn't sound as bad as it does in the clip.

Seams you are right bud... that really does sound like a tractor.

this put me in mind of a scirocco I had, got fuel starvation symptoms, when i took the fuel feed pipe off the pump or carb (cant remember which now, near driver side inner wing) and blew it through back to tank, car would run fine for a couple of days. It turned out that some shit and corrosion from inside of tank filler tube had fallen into tank and got sucked to the pick-up pipe gauze and blocked it. Had to change the filler neck and clean out tank to cure it. For what it's worth... just a thought...

Not really knowledgeable bout The engines yet but did u check the oil pressure could it be oil notbeing circulated well good luck with it
