To run alongside the Z I have picked up a S14 auto which will be my 2nd project. I had been planning to build the Z with big power and for track action but decided against extreme tack action as I don't think it's right to strip it and ruin a good cruiser. So the S14 will get the full stripping and extreme track prep. Starting removing the T28 turbo, loom an ECU which is sold and has covered 2/3 of the cost of the car

Next to go will be the ABS and the engine which is knocking alot along with the auto slush box, then the front and rear subframes for some rust treatment and car undersealing. As I can't do much to the Z until it comes off the road after Trax then I guess it should keep me busy. Over the winter there will be custom bits to be made including a front subframe with engine mounts, gearbox mounts and I think manifolds or downpipes!

Pictures to follow!

Just picked an s14a project up myself. Do you mind me asking bud - how much did you pay for your s14? PM if you'd rather not say on here! Get those pictures up as well!

All good apart from a bottom end knock, has a full service history. Going to drain oil and have a look as it may just be new bearings, the guy took it off the road when the knocking started.

An update, custom subframe for test fit, if it works it'll need alot more welding!

And finally an engine to sit on it, looks at home in there don't you think?

Work has started again along with the ZED. Pictures soon, I have cured the big problem of the turbo fouling the steering rack which slowed me down a lot so its full steam ahead!!

looks more room in there than the zeds lol!!! keep up the good work

Yeah i've seen it theres alot more room lol

What do you plan to do in terms of gearbox/drivetrain components? Is the S14 diff able to take the extra power? How much are you going for?

  • Author

Welding and using the original auto diff and a 300 gearbox. I'm only going to get a map on the car for around 350-360bhp so the diff should cope. That kind of power is plenty as the car is stripped bare!

Nice, that must be weighing in well under a tonne then! Good luck and keep the thread updated with pics of what you do, some of the best reading is build threads

Pictures to come on the weekend but radiator and fan brackets made, just need to be made in thicker steel. Custom sump template made up for oil pick up (thanks Mr Kellogs for the cardboard!)

And then the sad job of removing the donor engine from my 300, rad+fan out, all wiring disconnected, all vac/boost/air lines disconnected. Next the horrible job of the bits underneath to disconnect!!

Bit of an update as managed a few busy days on the project, even got the gazebo out with the crap weather! so today I managed to...

Mount the P/S pump as it is on the opposite side to a 300zx

Fit the fans and radiator with metal brackets, 300zx oe hoses work!

Mounted both 300zx intercoolers, can't go FM as need to put the intake/maf in the front

Mocked up the intake, intercooler piping on the passenger side

Fitted rear wing.

Pics below, enjoy....

Yes, custom sump, basically cut the bottom of mine and make and weld a reserve on the front and flat off the back. Will post more pics later. Oil filter tree was a big problem!
