when aiming for over 500hp does the MAF need to be changed or upgraded, especially for mapping....

and i need FACT rather than 'i guess so' just something smithy said earlier id like to question and solve.

thanks in advance.

from what ive read on here, the MAF is good for the amount of air needed for 550bhp.

To be safe though, you might wanna think about changing it out.

If you have a read on the Z1 website, they recommend swapping to a twin intake system if you want anything over 450bhp (and they're the smaller american nags we're talking about). If you switch to a dual intake system then you will need an additional MAF or a dummy MAF. Didn't fully understand the dummy MAF bit, but basically you need two sensors - one for each cone.

If I were you mate, I'd think about running a dual intake. Firstly, it will undoubtedly give a free-er breathing engine, it will improve responsiveness and ultimately add a bit more poke too. You could just run a single intake - but with your turbos, it'd be like an asthmatic breathing through a biro tube. Reckon on about 500 quid for a dual intake system and another MAF unit. I will be going down this route and I'm aiming for 100 less horses than what you should end up with.

search 'twin pop' or doolz

basically, you split the intake, have the MAF on one side and change the ecu to double the reading

For "Real" 500bhp yes.

Maf's internal diameters determine the maximum flow of air that the hotwire can read and send a pulsed signal to the ECU, This is why cars at their max which then go standalone, see a dramatic increase in power as the MAF is done away with.

In the early days of fabricating, we made a number of new Maf's for different cars and the hotwires transferred over, Roger clark who now deals in Scoobies sells a larger diamater metal Maf, but uses the stock hot wire.

Also how close or far the maf is from the turbo determines the strength of the pulsed signal, again you can get relocation kits for various models.

Our Maf is quite large and used as an upgrade for other cars and we use the Q45 as it's 10mm bigger.

If you want a confirmed 500, go dual pop with a selin translator for the signals and smooth running, job done!

you big power guys, where can i get a good dual intake in the UK? and where to get the q45 MAF, also is it a straight fit?? space is the issue as with the large front mount intercooler, i have very little room down the front....

i got a couple of q45 MAF's if you want one.

dan.

if you have a look on z1, they do a doolz v2 that extends your intake kit out to where the stock SMIC's sit.

Best bet thees days particularly if you're having a re-map is to use a ford lightening MAF. Flows enough for 700bhp, is cheaper than one nissan unit and no low speed issues like with the doolz style intakes.
