Well, I think my starter motor may be on the way out. Takes several turns of the key to get any response to start the engine and sounds a bit iffy too.

Thinking of sourcing a reconditioned unit rather than risking an old one off eBay etc. Does anyone know a good source of reconditoned units at reasonable prices?

I had issues with my starter some years ago...... turned out to be a loose earth on the starter. Gave it a good clean, re-connected the wire and it has been fine for many years now.

Yes I'll give that a go first, but was just anticipating the possible need for replacement. It has been absolutely fine then this morning, lunch time and tea time gave problems.

If it does turn out to be faulty then Jeff at Zedworld will be able to sort you out with a good one.

I have a good working one, £35 plus post. Removed from a 1993 TT

So, I went out to check under the car and found I can't get my trolley jack under it...so guess it's lowered then........so I couldn't get under the car...arrggghhhh

The symptons are....I go out and try to start the car and it's like the battery is flat (shows a healthy 13 volts) for a couple of turns, and sounds like the solenoid or relay switches ok. Then after a couple of turns it spins something but weakly and the alarm sounds briefly (one peep) then usually after a couple more goes it starts. Once it's started once, I can turn it off and start it pretty much every time. Then if I leave it a while and go back to it the same thing happens.....does this give anyone a better idea of what may be the cause?

sounds more like the battery. Try a jump start and see if it does the same

Pretty certain the only way to test a battery is a load test, voltmeter won't show if the battery has enough amps to turn the engine.

Pre jack the car with the standard tyre change jack first (make sure you put it in the right place!) then you will be able to get your trolley jack under.
