Hi Guys, got some issues with my gearbox, Bought the car with a known problem, Gbox stayed in safety mode. Initially the problem was thought to be the speed sensor, however after swapping it out with a good one, the problem didn't go away. General reading on this site and others, indicated the Box was buggered.

So with the help of Vodkashots (what a guy!) the Box was removed, upon first check it seemed okay, however then something happened which led me to beleive the box was really f'd up.

Any way, Here's my car... here's my box, but i dont think i should be able to do this!!

Any way, does anyone think the box is refurbish-able..

Is this ability to remove the input shaft indicate there is a known and fixable problem with the box? The replacement box couldn't remove the input shaft...

Cheers

Dont worry Rich you can pull the input shaft straight out. If you think you have a problem with it strip it down and take alook. Everything you need to know is in the manual.

ZW Hi, thanks for your input (shaft) I know its in the manual, but have you ever stripped down a box before,

Cheers

done a few in my time Rich so i can help you out with advice and tell you where to get the spares from.

this is what the insides look like these are assy as they would be in the case. You can see the two slide hammers (top of the picture) i made to remove the pump.

How does that valve body matrix thing work, is it a maze of passages for the fluid to flow, looks highly complex?

if i knew that i'd be designing them not getting covered in sh1t rebuilding them :lol:

Wow that look cool. My Zeds an Auto and i had a refurbished box put in. I still have the one they took out. So are you saying it can be repaired fairly cheaply? Also how do you test a repaired box? Do you put it back on the car and prey.

So do you rebuild these just for yourself or for other too as a job ?

Now a days i rebuild them mainly for people I know I restore classic cars for a living now but can help anyone out if needed.

Cheaply depends on whats wrong  Everything you need to know is in the manual and im happy to help if needed. You can test the box after a rebuild with compressed air to make sure everything is working before you commit it to the car.

ZD hi, i take it that's an auto box, are the majority of problems occurring INSIDE that cylindrical part with slots (dont know what it's called).

Rich

common problem is they get forgotten at service time and never get the filters cleaned/changed. Over time the oil gets contaminated with fiction material from the drive plates and clogs the filter which in turn will cause the valve boby to lose line press which in turn causes the drive plates and driven plates to slip and overheat which in turn causes more friction material to contaminate the oil which results in loss of the high gears and if left other damage.

So it can be as simple as changing the oil and filter, a bit more involed a complete rebuild or somewhere in between.
