De-cat, asking for trouble?

Hi All, I've got a Blitz induction kit on order and want to mod the exhaust to get the full benefit. The car has done less than 60K. My standard exhausts are good so I don't want to replace them at present. The car is a 1990 so should be OK to have the cat removed - (?)

Question 1. Will this fail an MOT emissions test?

Question 2. Will the increased boost blow the turbos to bits without a boost controller?

Question 3. Is it going to make it a lot louder?

Question 4. Is it going to make my fuel economy even more shocking?

Question 5. Does anyone have a good insurer that will insure for further mods? N.U will allow my mods for an increased premium but draw the line at ECU's etc.... :-(

cheers!!

RobH

PS apologies if these questions get asked regularly - I'm new to this list....

Answer 1: Shouldnt do, but it doesnt help

Answer 2: No but your turbo seals wont last too long if they are old

Answer 3: It makes it noticably louder, not loads I dont think

Answer 4: I should improve your economy

Answer 5: Firebond I think do mods, Adrian flux, try tesco.

1. Mine pissed the emission test with no cats.

2. My turbos have 60k on them and dont smoke.

3. Slightly but not under general driving.

4. Didnt notice any difference.

5. Dont tell them.

1. Could do - depends on year and whether its an import or not (imports don't need 'em - bit contravertial this!)

2. There is no increased boost, just less back pressure. This may adversely affect the turbo seals, but it doesn't seem to with mine. In fact it seems to smoke less.

3. Not horrendously, turbos are fairly effective silencers. Quite a diffence inside the car though.

4. Might even improve it slightly as it should be more efficient. Downside is that as it sounds and runs better you tend to welly it more.

5. See my web site for a list of insurance companies.

done mine ! biggrin.gif beautiful grumble to it

my car has done 95,000 and they dont smoke

but it smoked from one side of the engine one night very little but it hasn't done it since!

i would recommend it but then again i am getting better turbo's in the summer so i wasn't bothered if they did start to .

my 2p worth

good luck

Thanks guys! I think I'll proceed, I'm gonna inform the insurance tho' - an extra £12 a month - better than ruining your life if you get sued....

Never use the dont tell em strategy with insurers! My neighbour's Escort cossie developed a wiring loom fire. Meant a claim and the assessor opened the ecu and found it had been cossie chipped and my neighbour was completely ignorant of the non standard chip. His insurer declined to cover the damage due to the wiring loom and refunded his premium.
