Only noticed it this morning, hasn't done it before. Only comes on when I apply the brakes. What could this be? It doesn't happen all the time when I brake. Doesn't seem to have any effect on the cars behaviour at all.

check your power steering fluid resivior, on the drivers side of the engine bay... its probably a bit low. Use dot 5 fluid i think.

yep, most likely PAS fluid low. The hicas has a low fluid sensor on the top of the resevoir.

ย

However, dont use dot 5 fluid!

ย

You want Dexron II/III/VI Fluid. Does'nt matter which they are all compatible,. Typically listed as Auto transmission and Power steering fluid.

My bad... i just checked and i used dot 4 brake and clutch fluid.

ย

Why shouldn't you use dot 5 out of interest?

I think it contains a solvent, and it doesn't agree with old pipe work, maybe not a solvent, but something, i think :)

Hi mate

ย

Brake and clutch fluid is just that - for brake and hydraulic clutch systems. Power steering mechanisms use auto transmission fluid - as well as its capabilities for hydraulic applications it is also an oil of sorts, so it lubricates the moving parts in an auto gearbox or PAS rack. Probably.

ย

Oilman would have a more detailed explanation - but definitely do not use brake fluid in the PAS; anymore than you'd pour it into an auto transmission!!
