... I've just fitted a BOV I got from Vodkashots, bloody massive thing it is too. So in looking for where I should hook up the extra long bit of vacuum hose that came with it (I would rather plug up the older rubber hose and use the silicon stuff that came with the BOV) I was searching the forum and came up against this phrase of "goose honk".

Is this the sound that is very similar to someone blowing into the end of a metal tube at an angle, which occurs when you're just about to come on boost? Also, is this the fault of the re-circs? Is it because I have an aftermarket twin induction system? Whats actually happening to cause it, and will it go away now I have my new wooshy BOV installed?

Bare in mind I would just drive the car to test this theory, but it's still on 4 axle stands until tonight/tomorrow and has no MOT or Tax until the end of the week/start of next week when it all gets welded up etc. so I can't :(

That's definitely the noise I'm referring to in that video right there. Annoying as hell. So if it's to do with the recircs, I shouldn't get that anymore with a BOV right?

I can't view the second link as the forum just tells me I'm not currently logged in, which is because I don't have an account, lol.

Oh sorry about that. TwinTurbo is well worth joining (no charge) as there is soooo much tech info, FAQs etc.

One guy there claims the root cause is removing the stock airbox http://www.twinturbo.net/net/viewmsg.aspx?forum=general&msg_id=2393966&forum=general&dtSearch=11

They do have a thing they call the "Goose Honk Killer" http://www.twinturbo.net/net/viewmsg.aspx?forum=technical&msg_id=837615&forum=technical&dtSearch=0

goose honk is associated with the internals of the recirc valves when they fail, its letting pressure out before its supposed too. now you have a aftermarket vent to atmosphere dump valve and have blocked off the recirc pipes you shouldn't suffer with goose honk.

Ah, cool. So ideally then the goose honk is gone now. I don't understand why people have a problem with dump valve noise, is it just because of things like the fast and furious and idiots putting fake wooshy sound speakers on their Corsas or what?

I remember being in my very early teens and hearing things like Renault 5 GT Turbos coming down the road with a vrrrrrrrrrrrm PTSCH! and thinking, cool. :D

While I have peoples attention, which nipple should I hook up the vacuum hose to from the BOV? Never did find the answer in my search, was too busy reading about goose honk :D

I get this. I kind'a like it actually. It started happening when I replaced my exhaust for a decatted one and replaced my airbox with a cone filter.

So am I to understand that it's a symptom of failing tubs?

no, failing recirculation valves at the front of the car the OEM ones, they are located under the nose panel and to the extreme left and right, in front of all the radiators.

Ok cool, that's actually where I guessed in the end :D

Cheers dude.

Hollow plug it into either the balance bar, or the side of the plenum as shown in the picture above.

Ouch! I mean really, OUCH!

I know it all makes sense really and I understand how stuff like this comes together, but this makes me feel like I'm driving a gigantic liability!

I might just have to drive a little more sedately tomorrow morning for fear of breaking one of the butterfly wing dust diagphrams or something*!

(*Or not! :) )

Personally I think that picture looks distinctly like someone started to draw the London Tube map! :P
