The truth about my car at last!

Well when I bought my car, I bought it on Ebay. The car was in Milton Keynes, I was in Doncaster, the price was right and I didn't have time to go look before bidding. Allegedly the car had just had a 70K engine fitted (This could still be true, I know the engine was replaced for several reasons, one of which was I could see his old bottom end sat outside his garage), it also allegedly had uprated turbos in it, which we've now found out to be false, it has Automatic turbos in. Mikey squeezed his head up into the engine bay from underneath today and read the numbers on the turbos, so not impressed there, that also explains why I have what appears to be an automatic oil dipstick.

The car was also photographed for the ebay ad, with a snap off momo steering wheel, which by the time I arrived to pick the car up, was nowhere in sight, it was advertised with uprated discs and pads, yet by the time I got to pick the car up, he had pulled the front drilled and grooved discs off and replaced with standards, he'd done the same with the yellow stuff pads, thankfully he hadn't had time to do the rears.

Another fallisy was that is supposedly had coilover suspension on it, another lie, it had el-cheapo struts and lowering springs, very low and very firm granted, but not adjustable and it failed the MOT a few weeks ago on a leaky front strut. Plus after pulling them out, they are only fit to be weighed in, I couldn't even sell them on to someone to re-con them I don't think.

More problems we found with the car, like the thermostat was stuck open, several bolts on the front of the engine were not tightened either, mostly on water pipes. It looks as though someone has done a DIY cam belt job on it and just forgotten about the bolts on the lower side of the pipes, or couldn't get to them without proper tools or whatever. It also may or may not have been a tooth out, we will see when the new belt goes on, how it lines up. The CAS had been adjusted all the way to the left as well, which isn't usually a good sign.

I already knew my plenum was foobarred from when I had my regular mechanic do an oil change and change the rocker cover gaskets, before I had my own garage and a second car, but this is just a huge list of problems with the car, that shouldn't have existed! I wouldn't mind so much, but when I got down there the rear tyres were as bald as Captain Picard as well, so I had to change those before I could drive it back to Doncaster. All in all this car has now cost me (With replacement parts, up-rated parts rather than going back to/replacing with standard etc.) over £3K that it shouldn't have had to cost me if the Ebay ad were true. A 70K engine, allegedly professionally fitted, would NOT have these problems.

Another two huge lies which really do annoy me, were the dent in my drivers side wing and the rust on the rear sill. He allegedly "Wrote off a plant pot on his drive way", a few weeks ago I looked underneath, after someone on here had spotted it on a photo and suggested that perhaps someone had tried to jack it up on the front sill, and low and behold that's what had happened, that front sill is now completely rusted away to wafers and will have to be completely cut out, not impressed! The rust on the rear sill, he said it went through the MOT last April in just that exact same condition, which is *****CKS! because on closer inspection, it's got a hole all the way down the damn thing, which has been filled in and painted, so I reckon he did that to get it through it's MOT and sell it.

What I SHOULD have done in Milton Keynes when I realised he had pulled off the steering wheel and the brakes etc, was bargain him down or walk away, but since I'd gone to the trouble of getting the cash out the bank (That was a nightmare, but is another thread in the non-zed section), got on a coach to Milton Keynes, had him pick me up from the bus station, etc. I figured screw it, I'll buy it and deal with it. I won't be doing the same again! I'm just glad for my own morals, that I didn't take any of the offers on the car when I put it up for sale a few weeks ago, there is a lot of work that needs doing to this, mostly simple stuff granted, but costly, and I didn't know about most of it until now. I could have landed someone with a real lemon!

Moral of the story is, NEVER trust someone selling a zed on Ebay with limited history and stories of uprated turbos etc. If there are things missing, like steering wheels, brakes, suspension, replaced with standard parts from what was advertised, bargain them down or walk away, because they've likely ripped it apart, stripped all the goodies off and over-sold it. I am SO annoyed about the sale it's untrue, but there's nothing I can do about it now, other than put the car right and hopefully enjoy it from there on out.

Sorry about the long post, but am fuming and had to vent.

no offence fella, but if you saw alot of the problems when you went to pick the car up why did you continue to purchase it, if it was not as described you could have backed out of your ebay purchase quiet easily???

Yeah I drove it before I bought it, I was sort of ok at the time with replacing the rear tyres, since I thought all was well, he came out with all sorts of stuff about the performance being bad because the turbos were new and turned right down, blah blah blah, very convincing bloke, although I could tell he was a wideboy.

Also, the reason I didn't just walk away, was basically because I was at his house, in the middle of nowhere, in Milton Keynes, I went on the coach, so couldn't just jump back in my car and drive away, I'd have had to get him to take me to the bus station, or go find a bus stop that took me in the right direction, etc. etc.

On top of that, he had a receipt for the engine work and the car itself from the outside, does look pretty good. Yeah so it appeared to have a small rusty hole in the sill, been there before, easy fix, etc. etc. etc.

Although I am having a bitch, this is more a warning to others buying on ebay, check EVERYTHING, don't let the owner tell you about X Y and Z, without properly backing it up, ask WHY on EVERYTHING he says that seems strange, and most importantly, don't go on a one way coach ticket assuming it'll be fine because it's through ebay, go in a car, with someone else, so you can just say no and walk away if you need to. Wasting £100 - £150 in fuel because of walking away from a car is one thing, wasting that or more on bus and train fares and potentially ending up in completely the wrong place because of it all, is a scary thought and tbh is why I just bought the car and drove home.

mate its a similar story with the blue one that i got off big_jim.

The ebay add stated that it had a new engine from 46k miles, and although there is a printed out ebay bought page with the engine on, there is absolutely no paper work or photos to back up the claim that the engine was even changed. the add also stated that gear box had only just gone, yet chasing up the owners in the members section on here, shows that the gearbox fault was known over a year ago now.

there was no mention of smoking from the exhausts. or the lumpy idle. since i got the car off of Big_Jim, its in need of a new engine (so i cant see it being this new lump stuck in) as its got a hole in piston 6, so I'm not sure if the turbos are gone or its the fact there is absolutely no compression in cylinder 6, the plenum is swimming in oil, and the turbo pipes are as well. (Jim didnt have it up for sale, this is the ebay add that jim responded to, to get the car in the first place i might add)

There is also a hole that needs sorting out under the drivers side sill area, and also by the looks of it, the very nicely blended in side skirt on the drivers side will need to come off so the rear outer sill needs replacing before the next MOT.

Moral of the story, always worth getting someone to have a look for you, and if they remove stuff thats been advertised with the car, confront them about it and get the price lowered if your not happy.

**EDIT**

Next time your down near me getting a car and you want to say no, give me a ring you can stay at mine for the night and clear your head about what you want to do and how to get home. (that extends to anyone on here)

Cheers dude, you're a diamond. Think we're probably set for cars atm, we're looking for a run around banger for a few months, just while I get some serious stuff done to both the Z and the VR4 and don't want to risk not having a car, but I literally will just buy something that has a few months MOT on it and then scrap it if needs must.

Don't think I'll be flush enough to be buying any more cars I care about, for quite some time with all the expenditure on both of these lol. Both cars need work, although spending is ALMOST done on the Z now, I said ALMOST! :D

The offer is much appreciated though and it's why I love this owners club, the VR4 one is a little naff most of the time, mods are more concerned about re-posts and not searching for stuff than actually being helpful or considerate. Skyline Owners seems better these days, although I don't go on there much at all anymore since I don't have one anymore, but it did get REALLY shit at one point, to the extent that while I did still have my GTR, I only went on GTROC.

Ive done the same thing with one of my 328i sports mate.

It was from a forum member over on e36coupe.com

He'd driven to me from Devon, as he was having my 540i.

We'd done a deal that i was giving him £250 and my car.

When he got to me, he'd already told me that the bodywork needed doing, but not as bad as it was in real life!

The idle valve was dead, the Pas pump and wheel bearing too. I was annoyed, but they were little jobs and he'd driven all that way, i felt i had to do the deal. I wish i hadn't!

I should have given him some fuel money and sent him on his way.

Since owning the car, ive discovered the LSD its got, isn't an LSD! And taking the side skirt off, showed 2 big patches that have been welded! A shed of a car, but its my fault for taking it.

Im now breaking it!

Ouch, thought the 328i Sport had an LSD as standard? Has someone replaced it with a similar diff that's not LSD?

My problem these days, is my morals prevent me from selling something if I KNOW there are problems. I can't lie about it. Causes me no end of problems. Strictly speaking, I should have ebayed the 300 back in February when I knew it would fail it's MOT but had a couple of months left on it, then just told the same lies the previous owner told me, but I just can't do it! I couldn't stand to think I could be the cause of someones death, or worse yet, since I have kids, the cause of someones childs death, just because I lied to flog a bit of a lemon of a motor.

This is why I'm kinda glad I didn't accept any of the offers on the car, would have felt awful if they'd come back to me thinking I knew about all the crap I've found when taking it apart.

no offence fella, but if you saw alot of the problems when you went to pick the car up why did you continue to purchase it, if it was not as described you could have backed out of your ebay purchase quiet easily???

Have to agree, you cant buy a horse on ebay turn up to collect it and find out its a cow only to buy it anyway and take it home to only THEN decide its not what you wanted.

Agreed, did you not read the post that followed ZX-TTs where I said, Yes I was having a bitch but I was also more warning others not to make the same mistake? I also did not decide it wasn't what I wanted, I had no way of telling on site what the turbos were, I had no way of disproving the invoices put in front of me, and if I didn't want it, I wouldn't be ripping it apart now to put it back together, properly.

Hollowpoint I'm the same mate, i cant sell a car unless i tell the new owner everything about it. if there is something Ive missed its genuinely due to forgetting about it at the time im with the person. not because im trying to miss lead them.

It doesnt help sell a car sometimes, but at least people are fully aware of whats wrong with it before they part with there hard earned.

hollow point where did the engine come from? was it a supply and fit job from ebay? if so was the supplier based in the derby area

Not a clue mate. I bought it from a guy in Milton Keynes, he allegedly paid someone about £6500 to transplant a new engine, with bigger turbos and blah de blah de blah. I believe he paid someone else to do it, he'd even paid a guy to come and remove the front brake discs and put them on his 200SX, I know this, because before I finally drove the car away from his, one of the brake lines worked free and started spitting brake fluid all inside the arch liner, so he called the guy to come back and fix it.

In which case I can't really blame him, he got mugged and then so did I when he obviously realised how bad the car really was. Either way, it's nearly back together now, then just have to get it welded, re-sprayed and in the winter pull the engine out and do it proper!

Well essentially, they put in an auto engine, the broke most of the plenum, either by literally snapping the bolt holes that hold the coil packs or threading bolt holes in the plenum and lower plenum, the turbos are standard auto turbos (From what we can tell, potentially could have uprated internals of course, but I seriously doubt it) I think he paid them to install a full SS exhaust, they only fitted a cat back, they didn't plug the AC in as Mikey found out last week when he was doing my cam belt (I failed at it :(), looks like they replaced the cam belt but not the tensioners, they threaded the one of the bolt holes that holds the front water pipes on, they didn't bother doing up a couple of the bolts on those pipes either, they re-located the expansion tank next to the battery, even though they left the original expansion tank in the arch with nothing hooked into it and various other things they screwed up as well. Complete bodge job, which I will endeavour to put right in the winter, most likely with a replacement engine, that I'll likely spend far too much money on before it goes in the car!

some where there is a thread from jeff with a load of photos of what the comopany taht did mine did. i had one turbo perminatly engauged and the other perminently disengaed. and so many boost leaks i never hit boost in any event

I think I remember that thread, didn't realise it was yours. Was that the one where you had the wrong dipstick and all sorts of other stuff?

Jesus, I thought I had issues with my one I bought.

Feel sorry for you guys.

I also second that part - If someone wants a bed for the night I could put them up in the lounge downstairs on an air bed.

I'm in Kent, about 50 miles East of London.

Hope you get your cars sorted guys, I'm nearly there ;-)

Yeah I've still got the floppy auto dipstick as well, not sure if I could replace it or not tbh?
