Stephen Posted May 28, 2011 Posted May 28, 2011 few questions relating to my imment lowering of the car, i purchased some lowered and stiffer bilstiens from a club memeber which i will be fitting. firstly with a lwb and a 20mm rear drop and around 30mm on the front whats likly to hit speedbumps? exhaust midsection looks to be the lowest part. obviously the underside of the engine should be pretty safe. secondly. there are some metal plates that sit on top the struts do these sit ontop the strut or ontop the arch? furthermore to this point if i decided the front was a touch too low could a thicker one be used to space it out a little. thirdly.is there a way to switch the shocks without compltly resetting the alignment? obviously camber etc will be affected to an extent but i dont wanna take it all apart and it be so far out its undriveable before i get it all set up correctly again. last question, the rac will not tow cars that have been lowered, as this is quite a subtle drop im thinking they may not even notice if worst came to worst. but they are bright yellow, do i paint them black and claim there new but standard, or leave them yellow and dirty and plead ignorance? andyzx Posted May 28, 2011 Posted May 28, 2011 the plates sit on top of the shock between shock and arch . i dropped mine a while back but tomorrow im going to be lifting it up about 7mm on the front with 2 extra plates on both sides . these had to be modified because they will not sit one on top of the other due to their shape . ive also got longer studs for my shocks to allow for this . Stephen Posted May 29, 2011 Author Posted May 29, 2011 did you buy or fabricate these yourself? i suppose its no different to what 4x4 guys do to jack up the body lol Quote
andyzx Posted May 29, 2011 Posted May 29, 2011 i got extra spacers and had the centres bored out about 10mm extra and used cat exhaust gasket to place between the spacers to give a good solid plate Quote
Stephen Posted May 29, 2011 Author Posted May 29, 2011 where did you get them from? anyone else got anything to add to help? Quote
andyzx Posted May 29, 2011 Posted May 29, 2011 here you go mate . pic showing shock plate and spacers made from cat exhaust gasket . the gasket is available from most decent car spares shops . i got a piece measuring about 18 inches x 12 inches for about a fiver . easily big enough to make 6 spacers . used tin snips and a cup cutter . beware of the edges as its like razor blades when you cut it Quote
Stephen Posted May 29, 2011 Author Posted May 29, 2011 ah cheers for that man, only need to deal with the clearance issues etc now.... Quote

Stephen Posted June 5, 2011 Author Posted June 5, 2011 so any advice on the geometry? or am i just gonna have to suck it and see and get it all changed on a 4 wheel aligment jig. Quote
hellraiser Posted June 5, 2011 Posted June 5, 2011 so any advice on the geometry? or am i just gonna have to suck it and see and get it all changed on a 4 wheel aligment jig. it should only really effect the camber, any suspension mods should be set up correctly anyway to get the best out of them, for £60 its worth getting it laser aligned, but its harder without adjustable upper links, tension rods etc. mine is running neg 2 deg at the rear as i have no adjustable components at the back where as i have powertrix upper links and tension rods at the front and they set it up to oem specs within a couple of minutes!
