both are clean... happened randomly, was working fine, then blue smoke, then went to white, and runs lumpy....

could it be turbos?? ive literally put this engine in 3 weeks ago... and it has 4k worth of engine rebuild receipts 20k ago..

from experiance of a blown turbo, it sounds nothing like one.

Lumpy would indecate that a cylinder isnt working, most likely loss of compression between two cylinders, blue smoke would indecate oil, white is water. check your radiator for water.

just because there is loads of receipts, doesnt mean that it didnt over heat before he pulled it, and that the HG has failed.

When my golf GTI blew its HG between 2 cylinders, there was no warning. it just went from driving fine, to losing compression on cylinders 2 and 3, it shook the whole car. and the engine sounded rough as old nails.

check which cylinders arnt working, by pulling the coil pack plugs off one at a time and replacing them, till you find the one that DOESNT make the engine die / sound worse.

any idea why the exhuast is covered in oil, its literally pouring out...

the radiator is full, water is clean and clean.

oil cap is clean too...

im praying it is turbos, as ive an upgraded set waiting to go on, but with HG failure, thats me done with 300zx's as this is the 4th engine ive put into it.

try the coil pack test. there is obviously something wrong with the engine if its running rough. a turbo would not cause that, unless the spindle has shattered on the intake side and thrown bits of turbo into the intake valves.

Also remove the turbo inlet pipes and check for oil. only other thing i can think of why your getting oil in your pipes is due to piston failure.

but i still think it sounds like HG failure with a rough running engine.

look like this

not my car, but same color smoke. cant even sleep im that worried.

ok if it looks like that, does the car judder when idling, is there a very noticable vibration. does the engine run ok?

if your getting that smoke and the engine runs fine. then its most likely a turbo. if your getting some serious vibration due to cylinders not firing. then id say HG failure.

no juddering or vibration at all, the car idles stable, but when you accelerate, it makes the vw/ subaru sound... but still revs ok if that makes sence. but after 3k it sounds normal.

So in that case, it will most likely be turbo failure. reason its not very good is one turbo has obviously catastrophically failed, so only one side is boosting where as the other isn't. this would cause rough running when trying to boot it.

id advise you do not boost it. come to think of it. don't drive it until its fixed as boosting on one bank isn't going to be good for the second bank.

bump??? anyone else.... sorry but im totally crapping my pants here. as i hve no other car, and heavy work commitments, let alone the fact this thing needs another 1k minimum thrown at it.

sorry to hear this bud and hope its an easy fix for you, if u could upload a video showing what the cars doing it would help alot

Does sound like turbo failure... not had it on the zed, but my old BM went - DO NOT DRIVE it until you know what's happened though; I got a cloud of smoke, which then settled, decided to drive it to garage and got 6 miles before it completely let go... and that was taking it easy!

had a look under it today and the turbo itself is covered in oil, even the downpipe is leaking oil so im hoping this sounds like turbo failure, also noticed the vw/subaru sound is coming from the turbo that is dripping oil and not the engine itself. engine still revs fine, idles fine, and no majo or wierd substances in either oil cap or rad cap...

BUMP

Which side is it? Passenger or drivers?

If I remember rightly - Jeff was able to remove the passenger turbo without removing the engine - knowing your luck it will be the driver's side..

Will have a pair of T25's available soon - good working order! Make me an offer and you can keep a spare..

financially a kick in the ass, over 2k in 2 months on this poxy thing, not happy.

  • Author

dude, spent 2k on it and now its not even running so im in the same boat LOL. next time the engine or turbos go, its either sell it on rb25 lump.

fed up of poxy VG motor issues. rest of the car is brilliant, new seats and new interior make it a dream to sit in, next job, quiet exhausts, then full respray..
