Guys, any reason why I cannot leave off the expansion tank? I have already buggered up my original one, and now thanks to Vods have a replacement.

But due to the size of the new IC's it's still a pig to get into the space without it fouling on the tyre.

don't bin it

reason being, you rag the car for a while, it gets hot. Water expands into the overflow, when cool it sucks it back, ready for next time

or

car gets hot, excess coolant dumped onto road, all is well. Car cools down, next time you go for a run, you've only got half the coolant you should have leading to air in the system. This is promptly followed by a bunch of steam and overheated car

take your choice :)

In 8 years of zed ownership i've never known it dump coolant in the bottle, mine is dry as a bone must be a crack in it and never had any issues.

argh decisions decisions, was going to ditch it...... now not so sure. The rad cap does read 1.3 bar, but not so sure I want to risk a blown HG, so guess I will look at remounting it properly so the IC doesn't push it into the path of the tyre, lol.

I ran with a split overflow tank for ages without issues. Only time I noticed a leak was after a lap at the 'ring :) Point is it may not use it very often, but unless you happen to notice it then next time youre quite likely to overheat.

I run with one of these now, tucks up to the side of the IC out the way.

Ive been running with a Koyo rad, Nismo rad cap and a dry expansion tank for ages without problems. if I fill the rad right to the top (almost) then check it after a couple of days' driving, it will have settled down to about 10cm from the top (clay-colour just visible through neck of rad) - it has stayed at that level without top-up for months so I assume I have a cracked expansion tank also and that the level has settled down enough so that it never needs to overflow under pressure
