Guys, any reason why I cannot leave off the expansion tank? I have already buggered up my original one, and now thanks to Vods have a replacement.

But due to the size of the new IC's it's still a pig to get into the space without it fouling on the tyre.

nah sack it off totally and just route the pipe to the bottom of the car somewhere...

in its factory position in reduces air flow out the back of the intercooler thus affecting performance!

Baz I'm sure the car needs the expansion tank

The expansion tank is used to dump excess coolant from the rad when under high pressure/load and it draws back what it needs, if required.

Im not sure how detrimental to the cooling system it would be to delete altogether, but im sure Nissan put it there for a good reason lol

Cheers everybody, look like I'll be keeping it, .............or keep an eye on my temp gauge and carrier large amounts of water with me :whistling:

you should keep it, I have a small one from Summit racing, know as a 'moroso'. or just get any plastic tank, nothing special about it really

there has been numerous threads about it before. I thought once the water had overflowed into the tank then it couldnt get it back?

You have a point there Baz, its hardly likely to draw it back by suction as that would introduce air into the system. I will have a look around to see what info i can find

if it had some water in the tank to start with, and added/replaced water from the bottom of the tank, it could, it does have a dipstick, maybe it has a certain amount in to start with, so it can't suck air in... Just a guess tho...

Not really checked specifically on my zed but expansion tanks usually have the overflow pipe running down inside the expansion bottle that has coolant in - as the coolant expands it flows into the expansion bottle, as it cools & contracts it gets sucked back into the radiator.

HTH :)

If you want to ditch the expansion tank, get a large core radiator. This will hold the extra water needed when it is under pressure/load. Had mine fitted for several years now with the expansion tank removed, c.c. removed, washer bottle removed and the front inner wing liners partiallly removed for better flow to my godspeed smic's......

Interesting thread.

Mainly because I've found my coolant system pressurising and was told my CHG was in working order.

I also found that the pipe to my expansion tank was blocked and the tank itself broken.

So I bodged a plastic water bottle with a hose into it and put it in place.

So far, no more presurised coolant sytem!

The pressure load on the radiator cap determines at what point the valve opens under pressure and lets water out into the expansion bottle.

The bottle has a pipe from the radiator going to it's bottom. As soon as liquid is expelled from the radiator a seal should be made by the water in the expansion tank. As the pressure reduces this is siphoned back into the system, because it is still, in effect, a closed circuit.

Hope this helps

As ha been said a bigger rad will serve the cooling needs, although needs new brackets

I have an oversized rad .So if i block the pipe to the expansion tank i can then remove the bottle :) as im trying to tidy up my engine bay. .Lee

So as I'm running a "Koyo" style rad from DTA, are you saying the tank can go?

Take off the tank but but DO NOT block the overflow pipe!-just use a nice bit of silicone and route it down to the road.I used an uprated Rad cap on both the v6 and v8 with no problems.

Thanks mantav8 ill do that

i got rid of mine some time ago. no issues yet. and i just run a pipe to the bottom so that any excess can be dumped on the floor.

the rad cap is like a thermostat but opens under pressure not heat. so if there is too much pressure in the cooling system it dumps it in the bottle. but if it is dumping it in here this would mean you have too much pressure so therefore have a majour issue. and i cant see how it can suck it back as to suck it in there would have to be no pressure in the system really and this would mean the rad cap is now sealed again thus meaning no water can pass through it and back into the system???? but im probably wrong. lol. i havent got any issues so i say BIN IT!!!!!

You are wrong, the cap has a poppet valve that lets water flow back to the rad when cool....:tt2:
