curleykev Posted May 18, 2011 Posted May 18, 2011 After picking my new car up and driving 300 miles back home with it, last nite I had to go and pick my other car up from the airport. Just got onto the m4 when something didn't sound right with the car, seconds later what felt like a blowout happened. Managing to control it, I got from middle lane doing about 60mph onto the hard shoulder. The problem was obvious, no wheel nuts on the back wheel. Ok after getting out of what could easily have been a fatal accident, I thought I can pinch a nut of each wheel and get going Into the boot I go and ....... No jack no wheel wrench A call to the AA and an hour wait he turned and agreed to the idea, to our disbelieve all the other nuts on all the wheels were so loose they could be undone with his fingers Moral of the story, don't just check your oil and water before setting off Check your nuts too! sayers Posted May 18, 2011 Posted May 18, 2011 i took my car to have new tyres, all seemed well untill i needed to remove the rear pass wheel to get at the brakes, it turns out the monkey with the air gun had gotten carried away and " forgot " to tell me he had totally stripped two out of five wheel nuts, impressed i certainley was not . if i had of not needed to take the wheel off who knows how long i could have been hurtling around in this manner... Guest Mid-wales-zx Posted May 18, 2011 Posted May 18, 2011 why were they all loose in the first place? they dont ALL out of the blue come loose. Quote
curleykev Posted May 18, 2011 Author Posted May 18, 2011 close 1 bud, any damage? only to my underpants Quote
curleykev Posted May 18, 2011 Author Posted May 18, 2011 why were they all loose in the first place? they dont ALL out of the blue come loose. they look like a bit of a mismatch, lots of different type of nuts, going to replace the lot as soon as possible Quote
Baz Posted May 18, 2011 Posted May 18, 2011 sorry to hear it kev, glad you're ok. And glad you got a new zed! mine was making a clicking noise from the front and I found all the nuts on one wheel to be slightly loose! Quote
curleykev Posted May 18, 2011 Author Posted May 18, 2011 only thought of it earlier but i reckon someone loosened all the nuts with the intention of coming back later to swipe the wheels. locking wheelnuts have now been installed Quote
RichardS Posted May 18, 2011 Posted May 18, 2011 Wow - a lucky escape mate! Richard:ohmy: Quote I have something to say............ It's better to burn out than to fade away..... :tt2:
Ossian Posted May 18, 2011 Posted May 18, 2011 Had this a couple of weeks ago. I got a new front tyres fitted at lunch time at a place just round from the work. The manager advised I recheck the wheel nuts after about 50 miles (as he should). Never even got 10 miles down the motorway that night before I noticed a vibration and twigged what was wrong, had to pull onto the hard shoulder to tighten them up. Both fronts were lose the nearside was walloping about! Quote
stellaZ Posted May 19, 2011 Posted May 19, 2011 there is a thread knocking about on loose nut's, something to do with the threads on the old nuts stretching but could have also been due to being prepped for theft Quote
stellaZ Posted May 19, 2011 Posted May 19, 2011 oh and keep us updated on the zed kev not sure what it is but i really really like this zed? Quote
peranaman Posted May 21, 2011 Posted May 21, 2011 Just a tip - never, ever put anti-sieze or grease etc on your wheel nut threads. Make them hard to put on and off - could be a life saver. Quote
