If the gauge reads low then it is not necessarily down to low oil pressure! The sender unit is known to fail and this shows up when the engine has warmed up. It will read the correct pressure from start-up but soon drops to zero once you've been driving a while.

 

The sender is easy to replace but expensive - around £90 IIRC.....
