losing the will to carry on with my zed.......i have changed the standard air filter for a Hks mushroom type one, now the blooxy thing struggles to fire up, has a huge flat spot when i first press the throttle and to top it all off whilst stuck in traffic today it cut out and refused to restart, what do i need to do now to get around this latest in a very very long list of issues ....

thanks

Smithy, the car from cold , started and ran seemingly okay, then after a few minutes i had the horendous flat spot when pressing/ blipping the thorttle ( the revs acutally dipped to about 500 before picking back up. then , turning the car off, and then trying to restart it simply wouldnt, just turned over and over, at this point i threw my toys out of the cot and retired for the evening .

Ok in that case for now forget your induction kit or airbox, cos if it won't start neither of those fitted or not will stop it starting.

I think you've overfuelled it, fairly easy to do with start stop start.

To be sure whats what 1st, simply do a basic ECU diagnostic that only takes 10 mins and should prove a big help.

Your initial problem sounded like either the plug on the AFM wasn't right or the induction kit wasn't fitted right and a big air leak then existed or it was the start of a corroded ECU temp sensor, which will now result in a non start if that was the case. ECU check will confirm what.

smithy thanks, how do i do this diagnosis????, also, you mention overfueling, the car originally did this too me on Saturday, to get it fired up again, ( eventually) i turned it over , and over , and over whilst pumping the throttle and it eventually coughed into life, pumping the throttle was the key, so seemed more like underfueling ??? which led me to suspect poor air fuel mix due to the HKS filter being installed

oh bugger, just remebered, i disconnected the battery last night, will this have cleared all the codes????, sooooooo if i can get it to fire up today, how long should i leave it running before doing the diagnostics as instructed

yep it will have cleared the codes, except if a fault still exists, that code will be present after you try to start the car.

You can do the check straight after you try to start it, but with just the ignition on.

Even if car does start, switch off, ignition on and do check.

Smithy

Check the codes before you try to start it, you should get 55 i think. All clear.

Then try to start it and check it again.

here we go then, reconnected the battery, turned ignition on ECU read code 13, fired engine up , ran up to normal temp and again had flat spot , tried to monitor oxygen sensors but could not get a diagnostic reading on them ??? ( when the car was decatted they were snipped off under the car) when i reinstalled the cats i re soldered the joints under the car.turned engine off, went back to ecu diagnostics and this time got code 55 what on earth is going on....................

No that was the cat temp sensors we cut, had nothing to do with the O2 sensors that are mounted on your elbows. and they can be cut, only thing they would cause if there was a problem with the cut, is a light to come on, on the dash warning the cats are too warm.

Codes under Mode II

11: crank angle sensor circuit

12*: air flow meter circuit

13*: engine coolant temp. sensor circuit

14*: vehicle speed sensor circuit

21: ignition signal circuit

26*: boost pressure sensor

31*: ECU

32*: EGR function

33*: exhaust gas sensor circuit (left)

34: detonation sensor circuit

35*: exhaust gas temp. sensor circuit

42: fuel temp. sensor circuit

43*: throttle position sensor circuit

45*: injector leak

51*: injector circuit

53*: exhaust gas sensor circuit (right)

54: signal circuit from A/T control to ECU

55: NO malfunctions in the above

Could be the cut wires were earthing, but cant see why hot cat warning, would cause a flat spot. when all posts on this site under a search say "just cut them, tape up the ends and if it does earth its self it will light up the bulb on the dash, just remove the bulb from the dash if its getting on your nerves"

Code 13 explains why the car wouldn't start, so 1st job is clean both the connector and the sensor connectors so as to ensure no starting problems.

For something as minor as a flat spot, i would take a trip over to Zedworld and let them do their normal checks and setting up.

In the meantime a pic of your induction kit fitted would be helpful.

hi ian, sorry mate your are 100 % right , i got mixed up with terminology wherever i typed oxygen sensor replace with cat temp sensor, mysteriously code 13 no longer shows up but the car still has a flat spot when warm , even though the ecu gives code 55, booked into zedworld now for live monitoring and possibly a nissan 300 fueled outdoor bonfire and barbecue

a little update ... car has sat since the weekend , first turn of the key and away it went, warmed engine up a little then turned it off, tried to start it again and lo and behold it would not just turned over and over on the key, pumped the throttle lots wehilst turning it over and it finally coughed and spluttered into life, again ran it up a little then turned off and checked ecu :- came back with code 55 , so tried to start it again, and it turned over and over again on the key , finally after pumping the throttle it sluttered eventually into life, again ran it for a while then checked ecu again got code 55, shut door and stomped off resloving to vent my spleen on the forum, any ideas people ?????

That sounds like a PTU problem, did you knock anything down near it when changing the airfilter over?

sounds strange how a filter change would cause such issues as the filter its self is non electrical or mechanical, i still say it has something to do with the MAF, unplug the maf and plug it back in. i have a feeling one of the wires to the plug might of been damaged due to age, when putting the Airfilter on. but that wouldn't stop the car from starting. it would just be very lumpy when any revs are applied due to the ECU not knowing how much Air is passing through the engine and how much fuel to supply.

  • Author

sorry ian , should have said , what where and how do i test the PTU

Bolted to the cambelt cover on the drivers side, square box with two plugs attached. You normally swap for a working one to try to see if faulty

  • Author

superb, now for the next question, Big Jim, Ian, do you have a known good PTU i can use to try please, also, could a faulty PTU explain why my Z reported as being down on power.... and again jim, ian, would you be prepared to lop off the MAF connector and a decent lenght of wire so i can splice it in please . if poss would like to pick up today
