Why cant I just backup the contacts from my iphone?

It insists on having to sync, I dont want to fookin sync anything I just want to back it up....

After allowing it to sync with outlook (which I kenw would be a bad idea) its learnt all of my personal contacts, I dont want them on there as this is my work phone! So I asked it to "un sync" so whats it done? Oh yes it just deleted all of my work contacts.

FFS Why cant they just make a piece of useful software? Its Itunes' fault really, my god its just the worst thing in the world....argh so annoyed!

I agree, I had the same issues. Thankfully I jaibroke mine so there was an alternate way to get them off.

The iPhone is badass but all of Apple's software is shit

well its brilliant synced all of my contacts into outlook, great so now i need to find a way of seperating them all out, or in reality im going to end up just typing all the names and numbers again, ffs what a heap of shit.

This is only because I broke the screen and its being replaced on insurance. Argh! I;m sure they make it awkward on purpose, why on earth does it not have an option just to "sync" if it must (why must everything sync these days?) with JUST itunes, then buntunes can just store my contacts which is all I want it to do... This after it crashed when trying to do an update...

you shouldnt have to sync with outlook, i unticked the option to and just backed up my phone. upon reinstall onto my new iphone it also installed all my sim contacts

bugger, thats annoying, I was hoping it would do that but it didnt make any indication that it would do anywhere so I wasnt sure...

Argh! I just wish It would display a list of the contacts it had backed up.

Wil it automatically have backed up the pictures from it then? As it wants to sync the entirety of my "my pictures" folder - that'll take it a while and of course I dont want all that on my phone!

bugger should have written a disclaimer: im not responsible for your loss of contacts if you choose to follow my opinon written in the post above regards:)

unplug the phone, open itunes, go to edit, preferences, devices, and tick Stop Iphones, ipads and ipods from syncing automatically.

Then you can sync once you have set everything up. but agreed, the iphone is the best phone ive ever owned, the Apple software however is a pile of crap. jail brake it if its your own phone and your NOT running the latest update.

if you backup your phone it basically takes all the info from the phone to enable a complete restore. so that backup file could be used to backup another iphone connected to the computer so its not a sync its like a windows backup.

i backed up my 3g then when i got my iphone4 i just ran restore and it copied everything onto the new device :)

and if you pay close attention to when the phone syncs, it automatically backs up every time it syncs.

Damit, Thats what I was hoping it would do but It didnt give me any indication that was what it would do...

Ah well, I've been through the 300 + contacts and pulled out most of the work ones I can see, put them in a seperate group and I'm hoping I can select the outlook group from within Itunes and then I'll have my contacts back again... irritated though!

why dont you restore the phone from its last back up anyway? this would give you the phone back to its last sync? and a better base to start from with what your trying to do.

It restores everything on your phone from the back up, including text messages.

iphone are great especially when you jailbreak them then the whole world of modding can start. been messing with a theme over the last few days here is a screenshot ,would put my other one up but wouldnt want to offend our lady members ;)

Fair point! Didnt realise how to do that until just now, i have to say I just use my phone as its my work one so I've never really used itunes, I find it frustrating though, on the odd occasion I have used it!

Ohh shiney contacts again (Including the ones I had missed before)! Jolly good :)

yea, I switched away from the Iphone - Had every model inc the new Iphone 4 32GB - Moved to Android now, HTC Desire HD - Much more control - Just plug it in and copy what you want without Itunes deciding what is *allowed* etc
