Hi guys,

I'm trying for the life of me to figure out how to bring back the lump I am going to fit back to it's former glory before she goes under the bonnet.

Do you recommend this kit?

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Metal-Polishing-Restoration-Kit-Polishing-mops-polish-/260517925255?pt=UK_Motorcycle_Parts&hash=item3ca8141187

This is for the pulleys and alternator as well as the plenum etc...........

:whistling:

Thanks,

Ant

Thats a good kit, but i wouldnt recommend wearing the gloves to hold a piece of metal you are polishing using a wheel at high revs, if you catch it in the wheel you could lose a finger or worse. I use the disposable vinyl or rubber gloves to keep your hands a bit cleaner.

Metal polishing is time consuming but very fulfilling when you get the end results.

Sorry to thread hijack but been searching the web for ages and cant fine anything on this. either that or im just asking the wrong questions for google to find the answer. but anyway,

With the polishing kits, you can get different colored bars, Usually green and red with a starter kit. white for high shine. but what the kind of grades or shine can be expected with the green and red polishing bars. id like to get something to buff up the lip on my wheels, I've tried autosol, but i need to start off with something a little more, tougher, as the dug in crap doesn't seem to be shifting.

You will need a sisal cutting mop with a brown or grey bar for ali/steel, you then work down to the red bar with a softer mop, then blue for the final polish. The different coloured bars are for different metals and finishes. You can buy a starter kit from Halfords for about £15 or get a kit off ebay.

If you type into ebay metal polishing, then its all there....

Not sure if this is true for all halfords, but went to my local one last week and asked about a polishing kit, and they no longer stock them, me and a shop monkey went around looking and didnt see a single polishing kit. (well apart from the two bottles of polish and a cloth they try stinging you £19 for)

had a look on ebay already and got some mops. was just wondering what the colored bars are for (i know you put um on the mop and polish with them). there seems to be plenty of them but no description really of what one does what. or what stage you should be using what color bar, i hope you can understand what im trying to ask LOL

For ali or steel, ive used the brown and the grey bars for the first cutting of the flat metal, bear in mind you cant polish a turd  so prep metal before the first cutting process.

Brown bar for ali

Grey bar for steel

The red bar on a softer mop is a milder cut, it will get rid of the light scratch marks made with the first cut.

Blue bar is the finish block on a soft buffing mop, it will bring the shine.

I use vienna lime (white powder) between cuts/bar changes to get rid of any grease or residue from the previous mop.

i brought one of these the other day. it wasnt in the polishing section but in the body work reapirs ilse. with the fibreglass etc. i used it ona drill and whilst it came out ok, i would say something with a little more grunt would be required to get a perfect finish.

why not use carborundum paste . worked a treat for me in the past, cheap, easy to work with a drill head etc
