I personally prefer the LWB Z, Why do people prefer the SWB model? Is it just down the personal preference?

Me too. The SWB is a bit nippier around the bends and weighs less. It's more of a sports car than a GT like the LWB is.

Ah right, I assumed it would weigh less I just was wondering about and difference's.

So is the LWB only better if you prefer looks and thats it?

It depends on what your after, I wanted a true 2+2. You'll get lots of comments about the LWB being the Estate version etc. all rather boring. Both versions are great.

having owned both i find the shorties alot better to control if the back end does atep out and alot more fun to swing about. if you have kids/golf clubs then LWB is the way to go. Personally i wanted a sports car and i dont think a sports car should have rear seats if there is an option not to :)

I dont own golfclubs or kids lol, I dont need any space and it sounds a SWB would be more suited for me, still perfer the looks of a LWB.

Do the UK Z's come in SWB?

ah i dont think they class supra as a classic they said my GTO wasnt a classic and was the same age

I'm in the middle of basically reshelling my LWB due to rust, I was going to get a SWB for the rarity factor and base my project on that, but as I plan to keep it indefinately, I have to look at the future and there'll surely be a little 'un around in the not too distant future so must cater for that. Plus I do really like the look of the LWB, shortys seem a bit stumpy lol

a) Insurance LWIB might be worth a try http://www.300zx.co.uk/forums/showpost.php?p=1510713&postcount=10

b) I've had 2 LWBs and think they're almost unbeatable in flexibility. A great coupe 2+2 design which will cope with single driver to 4 adults (OK just for short runs but it is handy when you need to) to me and an exhibition stand doing shows for a week in merry Scotland then Devon.

And you can take the targas off (if you haven't got a boot-full of work). So ideal multipurpose coupe. I still challenge anyone to come up with a modern car that will do the same and look as good and perform as well.

When I last changed, however, I was convinced by my betters that a shorty slicktop was the better drive - the shorter wheelbase made for sharper and more responsive handling plus the slicktop was more rigid.

The looks were clearly designed as a matched pair compared to some of the streeeetched Zs which went from 2-str to 2+2 and most people (not all) say the 2+2s don't look as good as the 2-str. But the 300ZX looks good (to me anyhow) either way.

At the time, though, I couldn't find a good SWB so I guess I'll never know what they're like to like with as a practical day-to-day car which also has to earn its keep (or at least give me the excuse that "I can use it for work transport").

That's why I can't have a 350Z cos one of my satellite dish kits won't fit in with that bloody rear strut :)

Personally I like the 300zx full stop - SWB/LWB/J-spec/UK spec etc etc.....

......but since my daily driver is a strict 2 seater and I have a tendency to use my ZX for holidays, the LWB makes more sense for me as I doubt I'd fit 2 suitcases in a shorty!!

Whereas now, the big one goes in the boot and the small one can squeeze in behind the driver's seat. Just!!

I have something to say............ It's better to burn out than to fade away..... :tt2:

Footman James will insure you on a classic policy on a ZX at 25 dude.

Any problems PM me, I work there!

Does it have to be UK spec and garaged. Or am I confused.com :confused1:

Both versions are great. I've owned 3 LWB's and used to take weekend trips down to cornwall with the wife, 2 kids, golden retriever and luggage ! Suprisingly praticle for the type of car it is.

But when I decided to make the Z a weekend & track toy intead of the family daily driver, I opted for a Slicktop SWB. Not needing the rear seat room for kids meant I could benefit from the shorter more nimble chassis. It offers a sportier drive, and its lighter more rigid body makes it better suited as a base for further track prep.

As much as Im fond of the LWB I could never replace the slicktop with one. They are great GT cars but compared to the slicktop they feel lazy and "wobbly" - I you can feel the body flex and shake down the road.

In terms of looks, its all about what your used to. For SWB owners they will often say the LWB looks stretched. Whereas LWB owners will say that the SWB looks stumpy.

Personally I feel the slicktop is the best looking version - I love the shorter wider looking stance of the SWB and the roofline of the slicktop without targa's breaking it up.

But the difference in looks is minimal really. Most people cant tell the difference anyway.

Something like 80-90% of Z's in the UK are LWB, which makes it easier to find the right one for you. The SWB being a lot rarer, means it can be difficult finding one to the spec you want, and they tend to be priced a little higher. The Slicktop and Convertibles are by far the rarest.

Golf clubs fit in the boot of both versions, or at least they should. Neve tried it myself but one of the original design briefs of the car was that a set of Golf clubs must fit in the boot.

The SWB boot is quite a lot deeper than the LWB boot, meaning you can fit stuff in that you could never fit in the LWB. It lacks the space offered by rear seats ofcourse, but the difference in luggage praticalty is less than you would think.

Pm on its way matey. I got a decent quote online & they wanted to me ring them, so I did and thats when they said "oh they shouldnt have quoted me as im under 28". thanks.

@ Gio,Yowser & RichardSmith, thanks for the extra info. Im still liking the long wheelbase though I cant get into them shorty's at all, they just dont look right to me (no offense to SWB owners).

Even though I could possibly afford a better version I would sacrafice "agility" for the looks of a LWB.
