Speedo converter woes.

Can any of you shed light on this?

I've installed the converter, http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=370221451404 as per the instructions but the speedo doesn't register anything when it's connected up.

The instructions say to connect.....

Red wire +ve feed,

Black wire -ve/grnd,

Yellow wire signal feed from sender,

Green wire signal feed to speedo,

Grey wire unused.

So has anyone used one of these and had the same issues or have I a duff converter or are the snakeoil?

For the record, I'm quite proficient with electrics/soldering and the like and I've checked and double checked what I've done.

As the car's an '89 I think it's fair to say they're S1 clocks.

I've taken a +ve feed from the track arrowed in red and a -ve from the track arrowed in black.

I've split the track circled and soldered the yellow wire to the plug side and the green wire to the speedo side.

I'd cut the yellow wire to reconnect the speedo back up and it still works in K's.

Over to you.

when i did mine, i just used the screws on the back of the speedo, they are they connections for it, positive, negative and signal, and spliced intp one from the loom with a bullet connector so the cluster is still easily removed, much easier that soldering to that crappy material.... not much help mate but just thought i'd say!

Well, having spent more than my fair share of time in my past repairing ribbon cable tracks I thought this would be the way to go.

Different strokes eh?

I used to be an electro-medical engineer, I just prefer the easy life mate :) Whatever works... Does seem correct, you can't really go far wrong, as long as your signal wires are correct way round, it's only a positive and negative... Those senders are known to go duff, mine is playing up, just double check it, then if it's right, it has to be the converter I suppose? Especially as you speedo works fine without it....

You havent connected it to the speed signal from the plug that normally goes into the top plug hole you have marked. The green wire from the convertor needs to be connected to the speedo signal from the plug, which you will need to cut and crimp the two together, take a look at this, might be a different colour combination, but shows you what to do.

NB the convertor will not work with all the wires connected to the back of the speedo, unless you have made a cut in the copper track for signal or spliced it to the incoming speedo signal.

Hey Groover, that's pretty much what I did although I used different +12v and -ve tracks.

I 'broke' the signal track and soldered the wires on to them according to the instructions.

Although I used a multimeter to identify viable ground and switched +12v tracks, I'll maybe have another crack at it using the speedo connectors for the voltage supply once I can be bothered to pull the cluster out again!!

Thanks for the info. I've saved that PDF locally, I hope that's OK.
