Hi guys,

 

Hoping to collect my new toy this week, but hoping to use a recovery a frame such as this -

Would anyone be able to confirm if a zed can be pulled using one of these?

either use a total lift i.e, trailor or flat bed, or if push came to shove, use an A frame with dolly wheels and lift from the rear whilst strapping the steering wheel up. i wouldn't flat tow at all, especially if it's an auto.

i agree with silver bullet i work for a recovery company do not do a flat tow you will wind the gearbow to death if you can only do a front lift or flat tow MAKE sure you disconect the main prop shaft and just use a small rachet strap to hold it ip out the way.

i would just recomend getting a fully demountable flat bed.

Dont have to wor about your front bumper as the bed compleatly comes off the truck and its a full lift.

i do not recomend the Aframe or dollys just give you a bad head

Appreciate the advice guys but a flatbed will cost me more than the car. Just trying to get it back 60 miles as cheap as I can. Options currently are to drive it back in 2nd gear (it's an auto and only 1 and 2 is working) or my mate has an a frame. Everything else is proving to be expensive! However thanks for the information, really helpful if not what I wanted to hear!

What do we think about driving it 60 miles in 2nd (auto) ?? I don't know what the gear ratios are like?

Mine was towed about 15-20 miles using an a frame - it fitted under fine and no gearbox problems?? I knew about problems towing autos with the driving wheels on the ground but didnt think you could cause problems with a manual? Either way it seems to be OK but having said that my trip was only 15-20 miles and we stopped for about half an hour at a roadside stop if that would make a difference to saving the box doing it in short bursts?

 

*EDIT* just realised this is irrelevant as you stated yours is an auto in a later post - will teach me to read the whole thread properly :)

yeah, disconnect the prop shaft, as even in neutral, the oil pump in the box wont be working, so bearings etc. will be starved of oil but still spinning, which = badness...

How about if car was running but in neutral? Would that solve oil pump problem?

 

Thats will be fine, I don't know the legality of towing a car with the running engine and no driver?

if your driving it 60 miles, id attempt it in 2nd only, you only have to do 40mph everywhere and stay off the motorways / duel carrageway, if you use B roads and A roads you will be ok

For 60 miles I'd also take the chance. Keep off m'ways etc and stay at 40mph max, and it shouldn't take you more than 2 hours. It'd take you as long towing/carrying on a flatbed.

 

I've read your other post in someone elses auto-box thread; and as said above, your 'box is fried anyway so you'll not make it any worse. Staying at 40 or below will ensure you aren't putting too much pressure on the engine and cooling system.

 

And finally make sure your AA or RAC cover is up to date! Good luck,

Well that was the other thing I thought, drive it a few miles, call out the AA and await free home recovery??

if you have got to flat tow just disconnect the drive shaft off of the diff the then strap it up will be 4 to 6 bolt simples leaveing the car runing will make no odds or if you do not want to do that dont go above 25kmh i think my self i would do a full lift like i said befor much easyer if you have got a speck or weel lift frame take the front bumper off strap the steering weel up and rear lift

Got home 6 hours after set off. No serious injuries to report. Inspection to begin tomorrow, see where the oil has come from and work back from there.

It wasn't just a gearbox problem, the car had a horrendous bottom end rattle, a frame rubbed on inside of tyres so had to drive got 4 miles and blew a hole the size of a tax disc in the block. Awaited recovery as per plan b.

 

So will be putting in new engine and box shortly. Really tidy example in bodywork, deserves a decent engine!

It was priced right to take the risk on it being a nail, breaking the nice bits and weighing it in. Luckily it's actually a pretty nice car -

legaly its not to good but you can get away with it we are alway hearing of the a- company haveing theres jack nife there is word that they will be band as they are so dangerus but not yet as far as i know
