Not a Zed, but....

It's not a zed question, but was hoping more people may see it here!

I've just done some work for a friend on a Mk2 Clio, it failed on a bunch of things, including off side brake light out, and centre high level not working.

Now, the centre high level is a sealed LED unit, which is 30 odd quid + VAT, if the other 2 brake lights are working, will it still fail? Is it a case of 'if it is there it has to be working'? Can I just take it out and leave a hole there for the MOT? Cover it up with gaffer tape?

It's booked in for tomorrow, just wondering if it'll pass!

Cheers, Tudor...

If its not working, ie no lights at all come on, then it will be fine. I had a similar experience with my rear brake light on the perspex strip. It never worked as far as i knew, but on the day of the MOT it decided to work, but with only 2 bulbs. I either had to take out all the bulbs or replace the bulbs.

As long as the main brake lights work, it should be fine.

cheers graham, have been googling it to death, but every opinion seems to conflict! I presume they mentioned it because one of the other 2 wasn't working, so it only had two, i'll leave it on, the MOT place is only 100 yards from my house, so can easily just pop it back if i need to remove it or something... I keep hearing 'if it is present it must be working', that's why i was thinking of removing it? It's very obvious it is there, blue car, and black/clear light housing...

I would stick some tape over the lens to be sure, depends how picky the examiner is.

We have a couple of MOT guys on here that might come on later and clarify.

The high level brake light MUST work and if its made up of several bulbs then 50 % of those have to be functional.

A quote from testers manual

Additional stop lamps fitted and connected must be tested. Where extra lamps are fitted and there is doubt as to whether they are connected, the benefit of this doubt should be given to the presenter.

What Jimmer say's

And as you cant see the wiring to the high level brake lamp and a tester isnt allowed to use tools to remove trim to check it !!!!! guess what the tester should do :)

Just for peoples future reference, I spoke to the MOT guy, and he said if it isn't working at all, it's fine, it's only if it's working but less than 50% will it be a fail...

Thought so lol, i wonder if the same applies to the rest of the lights, ie none working lol

Next time I've got a blad tire, I might just take the wheel off when I take it, if it ain't there he can't test it :)
