rear light conversion

hi fellas i fitted a paul bailey rear light panel 2 the car and doing this makes 1 bulb each side redundant due to the origional having 2 bulbs each side for side lights and brake lights. the new lights use just the one bulb, the problem is that with the 2 redundant bulbs removed the lights malfunction indication comes on the dash which is a bit annoying. i have put 2 bulbs in and let them dangle freely behind the trim but the heat melted the trim doh! i then shorted across the bulb holders but this blew the relay in the boot. any ideas!!!

Easy, you have 2 choices, both disable the bulb indicator...

1) Remove dash and remove the "bulb out" indicator

2) If you look on the rear lighting harness there is a small box with a connector on it - this is attached to the original light cluster on the drivers side as standard. You need to cut the yellow/red wire. There are three of these but you need to get the right one... The one you need to cut is the one with the red/black next to it and the black below it. You can always solder them back together if you get the wrong one though...

Looking from the back of the connector you need this one:-

The one to cut is the bigger o wink.gif

Hope this helps

i had the same problem just a couple of days ago . there is a small rectangular relay type box on the off side all the light wires go into this if you look at the connector there are 3 yellow and red wires cut the one nearest the locking tab of the connector this works a treat

Does cutting this wire disbale the light sensor altogether? If so you have another option - fit a resistor in place of the bulb. You can by them at Maplins for around 50p, but you need a very high wattage (eg.50W for a 20W bulb 20W for for a 5W otherwise they will get too hot. Also bolt them down to a steel panel for cooling). That equates to 7.2Ohm for 20W bulb or 30Ohm for a 5W bulb (if I have the math right tonite). and you need a wire wound panel mount resistor (about as big as 1/2 a matchbox - gold).
