Tyre choices

I have been running Pirelli Pzero Assymetrico's on my 300zxTT and fancy a change as these are not brilliant. The wheels fitted are 8.5 x 18 (front) and 10 x 18 (Rear). I am thinking of going to Toyo Proxes T1-S on 235/40 (Front) and 265/35 (Rear). Has anyone got a better recommendation? I use the car everyday but also occassionally run it on trackdays and at Santa Pod.

Bridgestone S-02's or S-03's.

Picked mine up from Nelson with P6000s on it. Nice tyres but changed them for Avon ZR1s when they wore out. I find handling MUCH better from the Avons. I presume they do them in your sizes.

No experience of dragging I'm afraid so can't comment on that.

I've, personally, heard conflicting opinions about the Avons, I opted for Good Year Eagle F1 directionals, and so far, 8,000 miles on I'm still very pleased with them.

I have S02s and make a huge difference.

I thought the Pirelli Pzero Assymetrico where meant to be good.

I hear conficting information about Avon. But you watch most British Motor sport and thats what they use.

I also hear that the S03s are not as good as the S02s.

I also hear that the Mitchelin Pilot Sport are supposed to be good.

I've got uniroyal rainsports on mine 225/48/18 & 255/35/18 and can't fault them. Grip in the wet is almost unbelievable. Pretty cheap too.

i had Avon ZZ1 or ZR1 cant remember exactly, and in the dry they were as good as the S02's in my opinion, but in the wet, they were absolute crap. no other word for it.

the S02's are the best tyres i have used in the wet so far.

however, the most milage i have from S02's on the rear is 9,000, but Avons managed 18,000 !!!

now i have traction control for the wet, i might try something other than Bridgestone again....

According to Nissan Customer Service in J-land, Michelin were original fitment - at least for J spec (225/50 R 16 all round unlike UK spec).

According to Michelin Technical in the UK 0845 591 859 the original was probably MXX-NO which got superceded by the SXMXX3 N2 (geez - we're into snappy name territory then) which is still listed and available today for both the 300zx and some form of crappy Porschemobile.

Michelin tech chappy recommends the Pilot Sport as the canine's gonads as it sticks like "treacle" to a blanket (he's not allowed to say "shit" on an unshielded phone line to a customer).

Lastly, same tech bloke says one of his mates has a 300zxTT and loves it - he uses a slightly less OTT tyre: the Pilot Primacy. "But then he is retired...", he added! ROFL

Has anyone got experience of any of these Michelins?

SO2 VERY VERY GOOD. S03 i have on now and they are great. Wont ever try another make.

I had the Michelin Pilot Sports on when I picked up my J-spec TT (the guy I bought it off replaced the crap Japanese tyres because I had asked him to). They were very good in the dry but not exactly grippy in the wet. I then changed my rear rims to UK spec (i.e., 245's) and put on Bridgestone S-O3's and will NEVER put anything else on! They are unbelievable in both dry and the wet! I must have covered about 10k miles on them (mostly motorway cruising at speeds between 85-110mph) and they still have loads of thread on! Would recommend them to anyone and also strongly recommend getting them from Micheldever - they delivered them to my door over night for a very reasonable price.

Thankx, Danny - will remember when it comes to new rubber. SO-2s / 3s certainly seem to get a good press!

BTW, was there any reason to change to UK rims? Any pros / cons?

S03s from Micheldever on the rear of mine too. Great in the wet, very confidence inspiring, excellent tyres

Hmm... I agree to an extent, but then every tyre I've had has been dreadful in the wet. Has anyone seen Skippy? Yes, he's just parked his 300ZX in the hedge over there...

TOYOS are excellent, wouldnt use anything else excpet these or Yokohamas.

Gio - no real difference really, only cosmetic. Jap spec cars come with 225's at all four corners. The UK spec cars have the wider 245's at the rear.

I agree wholeheartedly with Danny, I wwouldn't put anything other than S-02/3s on my Z they are simply fantastic.

Had one Avon tyre on the rear of my Zed when I bought it - it was also on the wrong way round. But after turning it, it lasted a good long time with very little wear.

Now, however I have Bridgestone S03s from Micheldever - very good price and excellent tyres.

What is the difference between the Bridgestone SO2 and SO3?

S-02's have been replaced by S-03's. The new ones have a different tread pattern and are supposed to last longer. They also have a smaller rim protector, which is a real shame because IMO that was one of the best features of the S-02's. However, I suppose it means thinner sidewall, less heat buildup, different compounds, more consistent grip etc ....

I've just fitted Goodyear Eagle F1's all round, managed to get them for £95 a corner, I've had them on my GTO before the Z and they are very good tyres in the wet and dry.
