Ok folks it is something i have looked into in the past and just wanted to get my figures right so if i miss anything please let me know. So the costs of importing a used car is below what i believe it all is

price of the car

any admin fees to make the transaction

shipping cost had a quote of £500 from Japan

MOT test

Tax

and is that it? From what i read VAT and import tax wouldnt have to be paid on a old used car.

anything ive missed?

Depends on the car aswell VOSA will go over it with a fine toothcombe , what about Fog light and if Jap, Euro do you have to convert the clocks to MPH aswell ?? I'm no expert but I think you need a £100ish to do the changes I think

You don't have to change the clocks, all my imports were/are still in kph....

ah found some details

Example 2 - Vehicle Over 10 years old

Purchase Price in Japan 100,000 Yen FOB

* £ 500 Purchase of the car FOB in Japan

* £ 700 Shipping Cost

* £ 120 Import Duty 10% of above two (FOB Purchase Price plus Shipping Cost)

* £ 231 VAT 17.5% of above three (FOB Purchase Price plus Shipping Cost plus Import Duty)

* £ 200 Shipping Agent Fee

* £ 50 Customs

* £ 38 Car Registration Fee

* £ 200 MOT Preparation

* £ 30 UK Number Plates

* £ 40 MOT Test

* ======

* £2,109 Grand Total

Therefore it would cost me about 4k to get a RX7 turbo import over here and they are one i the few i see that seem to be holding good prices.

Dont bother with rx's my friend has had two, one even had a brand new engine in it and they both broke down mechanically.

Im not buying to drive there is a large shortage of RX7 manual turbos and supra manual turbos for sale over here that is a market to make money. You are looking at 9k for the lowest one. I also am well informed about the problems with rotary engines and its mostly due to people using the wrong oil.

Good Good, there is some good info on Driftworks about importing a car as well in the traders section.
