Is it legal to display/use an old style black and white rear license plate in place of a standard yellow and black plate on a 1991 300zx? Just looking to rid the car of yellow.... lol.

I seem to remember someone has an old style rear plate, but i may be wrong.

Cheerz,

Al.

Yeah it's illegal. The car must be registered pre 1971 (I think is the right date) Other than that it must be a standard retro-reflective yellow with standard black font

Think its 72 end of dec that is the cut off. I think it coincides with the Historic vehicle tax status

sorry to hi-jack the thread. but is it also true that now when a car reaches 25 years old it dosent count for tax free??

There was a rolling cut-off point, but the government stopped that, cant remember the year though

It never actually got to the rolling stage.

the cut off point is manufactured before the end of 1972.(not registered)

I seem to remember the scheme started as a rolling 25 years old; and then that nice Mr Brown in his days as Chancellor put a stop to it "rolling on" around 1997-8 making cars tax exempt only up to pre 1/1/1973 registrations.

At the time I had a 1974 Jag and was looking forward to it achieving free road tax status.....:surrender:

I have something to say............ It's better to burn out than to fade away..... :tt2:

For MOT purposes from the testers manual:

Vehicles first registered before 1 January 1973 may have registration plates displaying white, grey or silver characters on a black background.

Either way mate, it's another way to get more money out of the motorist.....:crying:

When a car reaches 25 years old it is usually just the well loved club members' fine examples that remain in good condition; whilst all the rest are just putting off that final journey to the scrappy. It would have been nice to have achieved that classic "free road tax" status eventually.

On a similar subject I checked out my old Rover 100 (NOT the Metro but the "Auntie") on askmid.com and was pleased to see the old girl still up and running. She was a 1961 model so reaches the grand old age of 50 this year:sorcerer:
