Hi there, can anyone help me with this tyre question.

I'm replacing my Japanese import tyres with Falken 452s. The rear tyres at the moment are 255/ 40/17. From advice I received on this site people said stick with that size. BUTthe company I'm dealing with can't source those; in fact they say Falken hasn't even made them yet(?) They are offering me 265/40/17's instead? I put this into the tyre calculator and it said my car would be 1.3% too slow. So 60 mph would be 60.8mph. I don't get this as the profile isn't changing just the width?? Any advice would be great,

Cheers,

Adam

The tyre profile is the height of the tyre sidewall as a percentage of the width.

So by changing the width you will alter the height of the sidewall although the profile stays the same.

Hope it helps

The profile changes because its a percentage of the width... wider tyres will mean the same profile is taller.

What J are your rear wheels as thats going to decide the tyre width limit ?

Sorry Bartflaster I didn't get the question about what 'J' are your rear tyres? cheers,

I have Falkens on the back of mine, I went up to 275/40/17. They look much more in proportion from the side view too. Have a look at a site called "the tyre bible" it will explain everything about tyres.

I will check out the J rating hwen I get honme tonight. But basically if the J rating is right I should go ahead with the 265/40/17 for the rear and not worru too much about the old 1.8% speed difference incurred????? cheers adz p.s. I did just read the tyre bible....

According to the tyre calculator, its actually 1.96% bigger than stock J spec wheels/tyres.

But it seems its generally regarded that as long as your within 2.5% then its fine.

By J spec I mean Jap, not reffering to the width lol.

I am only repeating what I learnt from asking around, so if I have dropped a clanger I am sure someone will correct me ;)

BTW my rears are 255/40/17 which is 0.7% bigger than Jap stock wheels/tires, and for the record my speedos KMH reading exactly translates to my sat nav's MPH, IE 100Kmh on the speedo shows 62-63 mph on the satnav.

First off, the dude saying falken do not make 452's in that size is trying to pull one over on you, as that is the same size tyre i have on the rear and i will be replacing the tyres with falken 452's in 255/40/17

HERE that might be a US site, but does prove they are in exsitance. Artztogo gave me a link to a UK site that delivers them but i have lost it some where lol

Thanks for that guys, I decided to go for the Falken 452s 265/40/17 for the rear. Spoke to the guy and I think the problem with sourcing the 255s is down to their supplier. They are a really nice compnay so I don't think he was trying to do me, just was beening fobbed off by his Falken supplier. Anyway a little wider on the back can only add to the look of a 300!!!......correct me if I'm wrong....

thats wot ive got on a the moment, replacing the fronts 235/45/17s on friday, then save some more pennies for the 265 rears which are £135 each

255/40/17 is quite a common tyre size so I'm surprised you were told they didn't make them!!

Falken list 452s in that fitment according to Demon Tweeks' catalogue; and as Falkens are a Japanese tyre (and 255/40/17 was the stock rear size for a Supra TT) I'm sure you'll find them.....:detective:

I have something to say............ It's better to burn out than to fade away..... :tt2:
