Repaints and targa leaks

Leaking targa`s can be an issue for any zed owner due to wear and tear but paying for a leak to be caused is another thing entirely.

Any decent repaint requires the door seals to be removed and in many cases the seals are not correctly fitted or sealed down as they would of been originally, but correcting this is quite simple.

So if you find yourself with leaking targa`s especially after a repaint then check the area`s in the first couple of pictures, the door seal runs from the lower front of the door opening up and around the targa area in one piece, and in most areas is just clipped, however as it passes close to the targa drain holes the seal needs to be firmly fixed down or rainwater will creep under it and from there can get inside the door opening. see pics 2 and 4

Pulling the seal up by the targa drain as in picture 3 and 5 you will soon see if it needs refixing down correctly....this is a simple job and as shown in pic 6 and 7 its a case of squeezing some clear silicon sealant under the seal, of course this is after cleaning the area and making sure its clean and dry.

Push the seal down and wipe away any surplus sealant as shown in pic 8, and then once all done refit the targa and clip down, (pic 9) this will keep everything in place whilst the silicon cures, leave at least overnight to be sure all has sealed down.

One other point after the seal have been completely removed for a repaint is to check the seal is firmly located in the A post strip as shown in pic 10

Of course the condition of the seal in general cannot be overlooked and sometimes there is no alternative but to fit new ones but at £80+ each side its got to be worth trying the sealant first.

Note the pictures are of a breaker for illustration only.

nice write up, i bet its not only a paint job, but over time your seals might come loose from the older sealant not doing its job any more, might help out more people, will be checking mine in the morning if its not still raining then. (they don't leak, but better to check and be safe than have to worry about water ingress into the floor pan)

Great write-up Jeff - I used Captain Tolley's Creeping Crack Cure on my driver's side and it's all but fixed the issue. I need to use more on the passenger side as I'm still getting the occasional spot of rainwater on my newly-trimmed seats!

One of the main reasons i havent put in most of the new interior in my car, is the leaking targa lol. Ive tried the sealant, but to be fair it was probably not dry enough, when i applied it. Will give it one last go before i set fire to it

i spoke too soon didn't i, just went out to check something on the car, and im leaking halfway down the A-piller on the passenger side, its dripping onto my doors air vent. now i can hardly silicon that part so what causes it to leak there? the leak is coming from where the window glass touches the rubber.

It will be leaking in the gap between the targa rubber (second red arrow in Jeffs pic) and the roof rubber then running down the door rubber and dripping

I am having this problem too been leaking since i got it, driver side was bad and pas side little drip, keep trying to seal it, drives side lot better found the main leake but have little drips and pas side same, every time seal somewhere comes in from somewhere else, cant find now where coming in from on both sides, water test nothing comes through but when rains always comes in lol, alrady tryed sealing all these points, have idea of sealing all down so no points to slip through or buy new seals, what would you guys do if having this problem?

Well just done mine so fingers crossed it's the cure.

Nice one Jeff on yet another informative and helpful "tip" thread for the members.

Think it would be a smashing idea if all these type of threads were put together someplace and stored for future reference.

The section could be called "Jeff's top Tips"
