Well I get my car back tonight, mechanic says I need new plugs again though, which is a pain as I only changed them back in August, although it may have a lot to do with the starter packing up and us trying to start it anyway, that may have fouled them up a lot.

Last time I bought NGK Iridium BKR6EIX-11's which seemed to perform well, just about to order some more off sparkplugs.co.uk and am wondering if anyone has any other recommendations before I do?

It's a manual TT, with lambdas disconnected. No idea what the ECU is until tonight and I was told when I bought it that it had uprated turbos but that they are turned down. Needs a trip to zedworld for a tune!

300ZX NGK Spark Plugs - Twin Turbo (Set of 6), PFR6B-11B

Only ones i would use they are the ideal depth and i know loads of other people recommend them. Wouldnt try to save a few quid and use anything else tbh

Yeah I wasn't trying to save money as such, it's just that I need to get the ECU sorted out, get the car tuned etc and whatever plugs I put in it now are going to get fouled up again because it overfuels like an alcoholic at a free bar. I've ordered some iridiums for now, just to keep the car going until it gets tuned. I've always used iridiums with my GTRs and other cars and been REALLY happy with the performance, but I heard a rumour they are not as recommended for the Z?

Any opinions?

as i said 300ZX NGK Spark Plugs - Twin Turbo (Set of 6), PFR6B-11B are made for the engine to have the right gap and depth anything else just isnt good enough and could cause detting your choice

Yeah I know what you mean Gonzo, the BKR6EIX-11 plugs I was talking about are the same depth, gap, heat etc, just iridium instead of platinum or copper. All I was really getting at was that I'd heard rumours about Iridiums not being as good in the 300 as they are in the GTR and other cars, something to do with the compression ratio but I never got the full story, wondered if anyone here could fill me in.

Oddly, even though Iridiums are cheaper than platinums, they tend to produce a better spark, because as a metal, it's more conductive. I need to get my ECU sorted out (Going outside with a torch in a minute to check it now I have the car back) and then I'll get a set of platinums and see which perform better.

Santa, because from previous experience, the downside to iridiums is that once they foul up, they don't ever come back up to scratch. I have a feeling that I'm going to have to go with Gonzos recommendation to be honest, as they shouldn't have fouled up as quickly as they have. That being said, also from previous experience, Iridiums tend to foul up fast if they're not running at their rated temperature, i.e. too cold because it's overfueling, so we'll see.

Thanks for the part number Gonzo, I'll grab a set and once the car is running properly fuel/air ratio wise I'll try them against each other.

Strange but true mate!! the OEM platinum plugs seem to have been proven as the best choice for a 300zx....

....even if you try NGK iridiums, the platinum ones still just appear to have the edge.

I have something to say............ It's better to burn out than to fade away..... :tt2:

Cheers Richard, I thought someone had said something similar to me before. I've just been out and checked the situation with the ECU anyway, and it looks to be a stock Nissan one, has a Nissan Logo and the number 36 on it, anyone confirm that's standard? If so, need to take a Meines one from someone, lol.
