Technically its not just royal mail. Its any official vehicle with the queens emblem on it ,as its classed as on her majestys service.

No sorry, the ambulance carries the crown as it's badge, but it's not leagally allowed to go through red lights......:detective:

Yes Sir Charles, I think any vehicle that carries the crown as it badge is tax exempt.....Do you know that the great treain robbers got so long in prison, not because they had stolen the money from the train, but also because they had held up a Royal Mail train, and it stems back to the days that "the mail must go through". They made an example out of them to anyone else thinking of doing the same thing........

you too seem to be a man of considerable useless knowledge, could of done with you the other night at avillage pub quiz... we were not so good. :whistling:

hell yeah. im as open as paris hiltons legs right now. lol

Fookin hell Mikey, that open??? :devil2:

Really the question should of been which vehicle "except emergency services"....as the emergency services are legally allowed to go through red lights. They just have to treat them as Give ways, which is not the same as it not being legal.

Utter tosh,

Biggest waste of energy and time I've read in ages. When was the last time you saw a royal mail van go through a red light? The law is riddled with archaic rules that date back to the middle ages, but that doesn't mean they are upheld. I think anyone in a royal mail van would rightly get pulled by plod if he attempted to run a read light.

"No - you see officer, I have this urgent junk mail to deliver to no. 13 Letsby Avenue, let me through.."

Copper - "Bend over Pat.."

You're all banned for getting involved with this pointless thread - me included (I shall observe a self imposed 1hr ban starting.... now).

Sorry, emergency vehicles do not have the legal right to pass through a red set of traffic lights, if they had an accident going through a red light, it would be their fault.

This was one of the first things taught to us on the police emergency advanced driving course, therefore it was a police officer teaching us.....

Just because you don't see it happen, doesn't mean that the rule isn't there. You will find also that horses have more rights whilst using the roads than a car does. If a Royal Mail van was to go through a red set of lights right under a police officers nose, technically, the police would not have the authority to stop it. Ask your local police officer. I don't see what was so stupid about it.

Don't take offence, it was meant in jest. If you want to have a go at some one, have a go at Mikey - he likes that kinda thing :tt2:

But I disagree, I absolutely refuse to believe that a copper would not stop a royal mail van if it went through a red light. Are you trying to tell me that if I passed through a green light at night time and got hit by a royal mail van running a red light, that it would be my fault? Absolute twoddle.

I withdraw my earlier jest at the pointlessness of this thread. But stand by my assumption that Posty would get a right royal ass pounding from plod if he ran a red light, just like any other road user. Until proven otherwise, that is :tt2:

Anyone on here work for the royal mail?

Believe what you like....lol, I know that technically a Royal Mail vehicle is the only vehicle allowed to drive legally through a red light, it was taught to us by the police on the police advanced driving course, can't see any reason why they would lie, can you?.........As I stated before, just because you don't see it happen, doesn't mean the rule isn't there. Royal Mail are exempt from many of the rules of the road. Also they do not need a road fund licence! Seems to me that a lot of people have read this thread, and have enjoyed reading it, so you're in the minority, if you think it's pointless, don't read or respond to it!!! I am not forcing you to.......

Ahem... (shoulda gone to specsavers) :innocent:

I fully believe that plod told you about this ancient rule from the times when cars shared the roads with horses and carts. I do not dispute this. what I do dispute is whether or not this 'law' would be upheld or even applied. I'm not a barrister or a law expert, but I'm pretty confident I could tear such a big hole in this illogical remnant from a bygone era, that a jury would rule unamimously in my favour, were I to act as prosecution in a case which represented someone injured by a Royal Mail van hitting another car as a result of running a red light.

As a matter of interest, there is a law in Canada that says you are not allowed to have sex with a dead fish. Bummer, guess I'll have to book my summer hols somewhere else then :pinch:

 well thats Canada off my list as well!!

They must treat it as a Give way sign, which is why its there fault if an accident occurs, just like any give way sign. This is what makes it Legal.

If it was illegal then they would not be allowed to do it. The police can also legally direct other traffic through a red light.
