Aaaaaarrrrrggggghhhhhh, Gotta get rid of it.....!!!!

I bought this gorgeous looking ZX back in July last year... One years warrenty..

There are three things that are really, REALLY, pissing me off. The first and the worse is that there is a flat spot, on pulling away at low revs.. Plugs, (Platinum Plugs..)and filters are all new...

The second thing is that the power steering tends to go really stiff all of a sudden at low speeds like going round a roundabout, then it'll come back.... Dogey or what... then thirdly... it crunches or notches into second gear... The gear I can live with but the other things are a pain...

My dealer, Bless him, has honoured the warrenty and had it back about six times and its been to different garages, but it is still the same.... I'd hate to have to lose the car cos it really is lush... but it seems to me that no one can sort these things out...... HEEEEEEEEELP...>!!!

The powersteering problem is a common one. It usually the speed sensor, loctated on the gearbox on the drivers I think it is.

It costs about £100.

The powersteering keeps going hard because its speed sensative and the speed sensor is probably sending duff information, confusing it into thinking the car is going faster than it is and making the steering harder.

Explain more on the flat spot.

What do you mean? Is there a little delay when you first press the accelerator till the revs come up?

Stuart

You have mail.

I also have a manual( only just got it) and mine als is a bit stif and crunches a litle in to second. is this normal?

Redline MT-90 on the gearbox crunchies matey smile.gif

Do a search for Delta Oils (Europe)

Why am I starting to worry about changing to a manual ?

Why am I beginning to remember "If it ain't broke ...." ?

Why did I spend so much on getting my autobox perfect ?

Why am I concerned about the durability and cost of clutches ?

Kyle, let me guess this is an import??? If so the power steering problem is simple - it will be the speed convertor. It will be attached to the back of the dashboard clock unit - take it out of the circuit and this should sort it - although your speedo will be back to reading in Kms.

Secondly on the hesitation problem - this could be a number of things but firstly try cleaning the throttle bodies http://www.twinturbo.net/ttnettech/tb/tb.html . Another cause for the problem could well be incorrect adjustment of the throttle plates in relation to each other or even the throttle position sensor.

Hope this helps some....

CheerZ,

Andy

Thanks all for your replies. WIll Try to answer all.

Yes it is an Import. '93 series II.

The flat spot: Just as you pull away from a standstill, it tries to stall, It's fine if you're intending to blow someone away but assuming I'm driving with a police car behind me just as the clutch bites and you let it out a little further there it is... It's very hard to explain... If I just rev it while idling you can just hear the slight hesitation before it pick up, almost like it's taking a breath before giving up the power. The car has had a new clutch put in.

THe power sterring thing: From the start, the rack has been changed, when first imported it was discovered that some chip to do with the change from MPH to Kms was the wrong chip. that was corrected. Pump fluid has been changed and blown through.. I also believe that the speed sensor was changed.. not sure on that though...

The second gear, I have heard that the gear boxes can be very notchy, but like I said I'm not too bothered about that...

Ok Kyle, sounds to me like the speed convertor is messing up the signal for the power steering and thats whats causing your problem there.

The hesitation again sounds like its the throttle bodies not balanced or more likely the throttle position sensor on the passenger side of the intake plenum out of adjustment wink.gif

All pretty easy stuff to cure to be honest - no need for any major cost wink.gif

CheerZ,

Andy

Kyle,

the power steering and throttle hesitation sounds exactly the same trouble i have.

the hesitation can problaby be cured by following some of the porevious posted FAQ's etc. i just havent gotten around to doing mine.... i live with it wink.gif although it doesnt sound as bad as yours...

the power steering problem might not be the speed convertor. i say this, because i have a UK spec, so dont have one....

i have had this problem for 2.5 years.

it normally happens after sitting in traffic for ages, then after the first bit of clear road, you notice you lost the steering at the first bend.

i have bashed ideas around with a nissan master mechanic and we still cant really decide what the problem is.

it could be bad fluid, it could be dodgy speed sensor, or it could be faulty pressure release valve on the rack. but if all those have been done on your car.....

i just havent had time or need to go through these with my car, as i dont use it much at the moment

Kyle,

The speed converter is definitely the problem only certain ones work on the 300ZX and there all the more expenisve ones.

Dealers fit the cheapest to cut costs.

If you want one email me:

lghands@nortelnetworks.com

Its easy to fit, and works guaranteed.

Plugs, make sure for the JAP you get the Nissan B plugs, as sold by Courtesy.

The Nissan plugs are not platinum, but a precious metal, which at this moment I cant remember the name.

Most of your faults could be down to the converter so start there first.

Leigh.

Many thanks for all your replies....

I'm gonna print this lot out and make another trip down to the dealers..... He did say that I could have my pick of nearly all the cars on his lot (Except a brand new one) and I have to say.... there wasn't anything there that was anywhere near as nice looking as my Zed.... So I'll persevere a little longer.....

Thanks Lads.... Hope to meet you all one day soon..

Andy,

How do you check/adjust the tps?

Cheers

Vijay
