Can anyone help me, dropped my portable HDD, now it's not recognized by my laptop, seems to boot up so I think the drive is damaged any way to recover the data it's got over 400GB of music on it. I did manage to get so files of yesterday then it hit a bad sector.

Only tactic i've heard of is to lower the temp in a fridge/freezer for a while then try spinning it up, not sure if that would help with a bad sector issue though

See if others come up with anything better first but its worth a shot as a last resort and has worked for some as a very short temp meassure, it all depends on what the issue is with the drive

if its corrupt data its harder as its trying to move something that it believes is missing try doing it in small blocks to get ass much as you can

Try this mate, plug the drive into the pc or laptop. Go to my computer find your HDD, right click on it, then go into properties, last option at the bottom, once in properties, click on the tools tab you should find the top option says check disc for errors, click the button, it will find and fix errors for you, it may not work on a dropped drive, but worth a try.

was the USB cable plugged into it when you dropped? Could well be the cable damaged, or the socket on the HDD, try givin it bit of a waggle etc...

does windows recognise the drive? with it being portable you can open up the casing and take out the drive, try installing it into a desktop pc and see if it will recognise it that way, this will tell you if its the drive or the caddy that is kerfooked. if it s the drive there are ways to recover the data. let me know how you get on.
