hi all as some of you may be aware i had a new gearbox ( a working one) put into my car the other day to replace the -what i thought was a nackered one, however i am still getting issues.

The car struggles to pull away as if it was a clutch problem (dont know if autos have a clutch?) or as if its in 3rd gear, well now the car wont reverse!!! it only drives forwards which is all good except i dont like pushing my car into parking spaces and off the driveway like fred flintstone.

any ideas what this could be ??

i just want my car back to normal !

heeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeelllllp :thumbup1:

jakai it will click into reverse and it engages but i look behind me and press the accellerator and i go forwards !! lol

From experience I would say you have a problem with the box you are not going to easily rectify, most likely without changing it...what warranty did you get?

no warrunty but i saw it working in the car it came from and it was fine, but now its in mine i seem to be getting issues. and they are the same type of issues i had with my old box, is there anything else that can cause such a thing ? i really dont have 80 odd quid to get another put in right now otherwise id be booking in with you now jeff . but if worst case scenario then ill have to get saving for a couple of months

is it easy to realign the box and would it cause problems like this if it wasnt realigned with the prop etc ?? my mechanic was very confident and to be fair he knew what he was doing but, he is only human .

also thread before was supposed to say 800 odd quid lol i wish it was 80

has your fitter adjusted the main rod from the lever to the box if so this could cause the problems suggested just a thought

You might have a knackered gear selector if its doing the same as your old box. Youve eliminated the box by changing it, unlikely have the same problem as your old, considering you saw this one working.

I would check the selector linkage to the box, its possible you have a nut missing on the selector or something, that feels like you are putting it in reverse, but the linkage isnt moving far enough to engage the gear at the box.

You may also have a line pressure problem, but if the box was changed i would imagine you had the oil changed although the lines to the cooler may have a blockage.

did you replace the torque converter at the same time?

were the cooler lines to the rad flushed?

has it ever reversed with the new box in,

just trying to get a better picture

  • Author

ok cheers guys -

yes torque converter replaced

new oil was put in - not sure how i flush the cooler lines?? i would happily try it if someone can tell me how.

the gear linkage thing how do i check this and were is it located, i know the mechanic put the one from my old box onto th new one, but are you talking from inside the car by the gearstick???

and yes it reversed perfectly fine a few times till earlier.

it no longer feels like its pulling away in 3rd which is a bonus but the flintstones reversing technique is a bit of a downer.

cheers for the resposes guys

:D

The linkage is on the top side of the box, not the one in the car.

Do an auto box diagnostic and see what it throws up

http://www.twinturbo.net/ttnettech/autodiag/autodiag.html

For the cooler lines, one on the drivers side and the other on the pass side, let the fluid drain out, there may be quite a bit so get an oil pan to collect it.

Rather than trying to flush through from on side to the other, you could disconnect the pipes from the oil cooler in front of the rad, the cooler may be blocked.

cheers groover ! do u know how this would cause such an odd thing happening just from blocked pipes ??

and when i look at the gear linkage what exactly will i be looking for please ??

If you have weak line pressure, it causes problems with the line pressure solenoid and shift solenoids.

Having had a think about it, i would do the diagnostics, it could be the auto ecu at fault and not the linkage or lines.

Another thought, have you used the same elctrical connectors for the new gearbox?

I would get your mechanic to test all the electrical connections, do the diagnostic check.

If he needs more info http://www.300zx.co.uk/cgi-bin/manual.cgi?list=at&dir=&config=&refresh=&cycle=off&scale=0&design=default&total=194

I find it hard to believe two boxes have exaclty the same problem, has to be connector or auto ecu related.

thats my thoughts exactly. he used my old lever from the shifter i dont know if he took it out completly or just tightened it up to the new gearbox without touching the above x, y screws etc (i dont think he would have needed to) so i doubt he did. i am going to get him to flush the oil cooler pipes and ill do i diagnostics test today to check, the new gearbox i got i have to say looked in way better shape than my old one it was so clean and tidy and was fine when they drove the donor car in . the reason they were breaking it is due to the brakes being seized and due to it being worth more in parts.

my mechanic also changed the wiring harness he used the new one which also was in better shape than my old one so again doubtfull that has anything to do with it.

groover you have given me some hope so thank you, i will get all this checked and let you know how i get on :D

cheers mate

Jon

my mechanic also changed the wiring harness

How? the loom is wired direct into the box, either he cut and joined cables or took the box apart which I doubt, if the loom was cut and reconnected this will need looking at.

Sure reverse is selected manually which means that ecu issue is ulikely.

Flushing the cooler pipes out is too late now, any contamination (if any) will be completely through the replacent box, agrree with yourself and doubt blockage is an issue.

How far was the donor zed driven to prove the box as youi mentioned it had seized brakes?

Jeff

Note: The cooler if original is in the radiator side header/s

Check the fuses for the auto trans, if is this fuse is gone the box will try to pull away in 3rd (get you home)

jeff only driven up and down the small road where the breakers yard was, not at any major speed i might add.

when i say the wiring loom i mean the wires that were attached to the replacement box were used, nothing was cut etc, all i mean is the old wires on the old box come off with the box and the wires on the new box was used, sorry for my explaintion , i myself am not mechanically minded and find it hard to explain things like this.

when you say is reverse is selected manually you mean actually when i put the shifter into reverse (which i did) it then drives forwards.

also i say that the car was driven i went ack the following morning for the box but i doubt they would con me and give me a dead box from another car and pretend it was the one i seen driving ?? but i suppose you never know! but what are the odds of both boxes having the exact same issues ..

Well I suppose anything is possible as far as which box you actually got, as far as having two boxes with the same fault that is very possible as the faults you are having are among the most common.

update : i took my car to the garage today to get the above all checked, the good news is it now reverses and drives absolutley fine except 1 thing which ill get to.

we put it in park and reved it a little with foot on the brake and handbrake on, and we heard a small click we then started to move the gear selector and it went into each gear fine.

next was the oil sump off and cleaned the lot so you could eat your dinner out of it and cleaned the filter which was not containing anything that shouldnt have been there except old oil.

gear selector was fine and tight so didnt need to adjust either.

the only issue is it holds in 3rd gear drives perfect but holds in third which i believe ( from searching the issue) is a get you home mode, so i take it i need to put it on consult to get it checked or do the manual diagnostics for a fault code ???
