Anyone else having fun in these icy conditions? had to drive back to my office late when the roads were quiet and very cold - have definitely noticed the lack of grip when summer tyres are really cold!

Theres just one corner going onto the estate thats a lot of fun, sharp left turn then give a little bootful in second on the apex to have the back swing out a little, and a nice second gear roundabout - so far ive only had the car a few months and been taking it gingerly, but my first experience of a bit of power oversteer and it was alright, car didnt bite as much as i thought it might with so much torque and the power delivery of a turbo! probably helped by a long wheelbase and overall weight.

I'm very slowly working up to being able to have a bit more fun on the roads - its not like i have no oversteer skills, on the track with a BMW 328i can hold awesome lairy slides, but always been hesitant doing it on public roads - mainly worried about not gathering it up properly and riding up a curb :s

Anyone else had some lairy moments? Theres too many 'I want this/I'm selling this/how do i do this' posts... lets have some more posts about driving the things, and frankly, how awesome they are! Any advice/stories for an emerging RWD enthusiast?

i booted the arse round this morning in the halfords car park, great fun! no idea how to drift properly tho

i got caught out yesterday . plenty of sideward action without much loud pedal action . new boots here we come .

I had the rear end kick out on me today when I booted it onto a motorway slip road in hot pursuit of a Scooby, see my post 300ZX eats Scooby.....lol

Good man

I like going sideways... but...

Just pick the right places. If you get caught out you might hurt yourself or someone else. Just imagine explaining to plod that the reason you bent 2 nice cars was because you were trying to drift it over an off-camber, blind summit hairpin left!Much better to find a quiet industrial estate, or well sited quiet B-roads that you are familiar with.. Assuming you're not a complete Nimrod, then I absolutely agree - more talk about enjoying these cars..

IMO the Zed is a great car for drifting - I don't very often try it in the dry, but in the wet its easily caught, held and adjusted - you just need to know the surface underneath your wheels (never assume that grip is constant, it can change meter by meter). I've heard people say that the Zed is a bit awkward, but I reckon they're a bit limp wristed. Sometimes you have to man-handle it to keep a slide going but don't be scared of it - just build up slowly.

If you do get caught out in future then it always helps if you know how to respond in an emergency situation..

The worst thing about these conditions though, is spinning the wheels when you don't mean to. I had it at Xmas, doing X mph in fourth gear when the rears hit a bump and spun up. That's pretty scary - not something I enjoyed!

Be safe, have fun - simple

well, I found out something tonight... 36psi in the rears is too high! The roads werent even wet or particularly cold and it was still a nightmare trying to get power down. Have to get them back down to 33 like they were before.

I also found out that my zed is fine with lifting off mid corner, or even dabbing the brakes mid corner, which was the usual reliable way of getting my mx5 to go sideways.

Personally, I run 30 psi max at this time of year. Front or back.

If I want to have some fun then yeah, pump them up. But generally hard, cold tyres and 300+ power don't mix with greasy winter roads.

What size wheels are you running? And what profile rubber? That'll make a big difference also..

fronts are 225 40 18s, rears are 255 35 18. i found the ride a bit crashy so thought i might have a slow puncture, but when i came to test them, the fronts were 34 and the rears 32. might leave the fronts at 36 as they did look a bit flat at 34, but put the rears back down to 33.

i am looking forward to having warm dry roads in a few months! at the moment full throttle in any of the first 3 gears is a sketchy affair, even in a straight line!

4th on motorways though... :D n leptons very quickly turns into n+50 leptons...

Leptons? WTF are Leptons? Are they off the starboard bow?

Anyway, with those skimpy profiles you're probably advised to keep a bit more pressure in them, you don't want to hit a pot hole and fook the rim..

I have 235's front and rear, with THE cheapest tyres known to mankind :helpsmilie:

Makes for effortless oversteer (in the wet, anyway)
