hi, does anyone know where the main live wire is for the dash/speedo lights are and what colour it is, trying to fit some plazma dial lights in and says to conect to main live for dash lights, also does anyone know how to convert the speedo dial from 120mph to 180mph dial, thanks

Featured Replies

Best place t get a feed for the EL dials are the 2 screws at the bottom of the dash. The left screw as you look at the front is the live feed. HTH

The El dials, should be in MPH and read to 180 MPH,

Thanks for your post

If i go into that will the plazma lights stay on if i flick between side/dip/high lights.

I had the head unit with the dial that goes to 120mph, got a new head unit, but this one has speedo dial at 180mph, put this in hoping that will work its self out but hasnt, is there anything that will convert from one to other, thanks

Your dash or lights wont be affected at all.

Did you put in UK clocks 180mph or Jap 180kph?

What problem are you having with the reading, intermittent, erratic or reading faster than they should be?

You may have a problem with your speed sensor in the gearbox, but need to clarify the dash first, maybe get a pic up to see.

If you have Jap clocks you can buy a convertor to change it to read in miles, but not one for the problem you describe. Some speedo's suffer from dry joints, which can give an intermittent reading and can affect the power steering.

i havent got pics at moment but things i have bought are from ebay and got ebay item numbers so can view them, the head unit is Ebay Item number: 270693950442, and the plazma dials are Ebay Item number: 250736451898, also wired on new head unit at moment is kph to mph converter which is Ebay Item number: 400060708216, the car i have is 300zx non turbo manual, import, with new head unit in the dial is running faster than speed i am doing

It sounds like you are still running in KPH. Did you wire in the convertor?

Some convertors have different coloured wires depending on make and one wire connected wrong can make the difference.

If you can post up the directions for the installation, then i can compare it and see if its gone wrong somewhere.

Here is a link in our faq section, which might help http://www.300zx.co.uk/forums/showthread.php?t=117157

will be working on the car on tuesday, have wired the converter in, will take dash back apart and check the wireing to see if matching and post up the wiring diagram that folowed before too, do you think this converer should pick up that now it is the 180mph twin turbo head unit in the car and not the non turbo 120mph unit that was in originaly, from ebay item numbers, do you think all these should work ok in my car

The clocks will still work in your car, I have an N/A running with UK clocks with no problems at all.

It is more likely to be a wire wrong, either the speedo signal feed or the wrong out put on the convertor. Once youve got it apart and changed a wire round, take the car for a spin before putting the whole dash back together. You just need your hazard switch plugged in for the indicators to work, dont worry about anything else, apart from the plugs in the back of the dash lol

will give that a go tomorow, hope fixes the problem, thank you for your help, will post back results, just to make sure with plazma lights if i wire into 2 screws at the bottom of the dash, the plazma dash/speedo lights will work when i turn side/dip/high lights on, thanks

Yes mate they will work. FYI the 2 screws at the bottom of the dash are the light supply to the 4 little bulbs, which act as front wash lighting, you need to remove them anyway or it will spoil the effect. So as you look at the dash, the left one is the live feed, right one ground.

hey, the lighting has worked perfect, some pics attached, the convertor from kph to mph hasnt worked wired up like said and just stopes the speedo from moving, removed it and running in kph again, also the oil psi stoped working, do you know any where where can get convertor that definatly will work, thanks

Hi Craig, they look really nice and im glad you got them working.

The oil pressure needle works on like a canterlever affair, i would check you havent got anything obstructing it, apart from the fact they are never that reliable due to a blocked oil press sensor, the guage should be fine.

Was the gauge working before you put in the EL faces?

So the convertor is dead then, did nt you just buy it from ebay? can you not return it?

The ebay convertors can be a bit hit and miss and reflects in the price. You could buy one from the zcentre, but its about £65. I would personally get some UK clocks for a bit extra and you can still put on your EL faces and the clocks will read in MPH and so will the Odometer and because it will be reading in MPH the 112mph restriction will also be lifted.

Failing the above, put up a wanted post for a convertor, someone might have one they used before changing to UK clocks.

Hey, thank you, yea the oil presure was working fine before but will check if anything is stoping it moving, found a UK edition twin turbo head unit but runs in mph, If I get this and swap it over will it work without getting a converter, ebay Item number: 200569156008

my car is 1991, manual, non turbo, import version

If not found on Z center web site a convertor will this one work fine:-

What do you think I should do, thanks

Edited by craig@300zx

Uk clocks will work fine in your N/A, i have the same in mine. Obviously there is no need or connection for the boost gauge, so that will just sit at zero lol.

All the UK cars/clocks were/are twin turbo.

thank you, your a star, will keep eye on the item on ebay and hopefully if get this then dont need to mess around with convertors, just put my dial fronts on it and away i go in mph lol, thanks

No Worries, dont forget with the EL dials, you still need bulbs/leds in the back to light the needles and odometer.

that is a good point, thank you will make sure got the bulbs in, will let you know how it goes on and if it all works out, thank you
