Hi all,

The gas struts which hold up my tailgate have failed.

What's the best solution? I assume I need new ones; does anyone have a pair that works well or is there a way of re-gassing them (I doubt it but worth a try!).

All suggestions welcome; as you can imagine, it's a pain opening it at the moment.

Thanks,

Shamaz

they need replacing mate, have you still got the original spoiler on as they can absorb water and make it real heavy

I've got a pair you can have for £20 posted.. if you want them PM me your address and I'll give you the paypal details.

Second hand ustrut nits are cheap but as Dragon back said if you have the original spoiler on its water retention properties will be the problem, as a work around remove the counter balance weight from the tailgate behind the trim panel, will help a little.

Thanks Jeff.

The reason I think it's the struts themselves is:

1. When the car had no spoiler, the struts were quite weak and even heavy rain would make the tailgate come down.

2. As soon as the new spoiler was installed (totally dry and in superb as-new condition) the struts could not handle the weight.

How much difference would removing the counter-balance weight make? What does it look like?

Thanks,

Shamaz

Ok I see, does sound like they have gone then, the counterbalance is not that heavy and is really just a temp work around, a couple of replacement struts is the way to go.

We do have them on the shelf in the stores if you want to go that route.

Mine are a tad weary, frost or any sort of weight and I am holding it open with my head :hammer:

Mine is SWB and when fully open on the car from ball to ball this length is 690mm, so if the LWB's are the same I am wanting some.

Please get back to me,

Andy.

Exactly! I had the same problem when I was spoilerless. A frosty morning was a nightmare and I couldn't believe that the weight of the frost would make such a difference. Mind you, now it doesn't hold at all.

Looks like quite a common issue but not surprising considering the age of the car.

I would hazzard a guess the pressure in the struts is reduced in the lower temperatures, so a weak strut will show up more when its cold.

I agree with both statements. In the ice cold with a ruined OEM spoiler the tailgate didnt want to stay up, but it would in more normal temps.

With the spoiler off though it flies up!!

i have the same problem with the struts,i find a 7 iron does a good job of holding the tailgate up lol

That's the best I've seen you use that club
