Hi all i got my Perspex strip today from Mjp, great service as always!!! (thanks Mike)

Just on fitting though i notice it has the clips to fit in on the tailgate bit but i’ve heard they need sealing on to with some sort of bond?

what have others used ?

thanks

Chris

Ok Chris, one thing to remember is and I cannot stress this enough

HANDLE WITH CARE!! the strips are super fragile when not fitted to the hatch.

Right the clips will not secure it sufficiently as the earlier tailgate does not have quite the same clip layout so an adhesive sealant such as Silkoflex is best used.

This helps fix the strip to the hatch but also you need to load some into the areas where it does not touch, this is needed or else when say washing the car and you lean on the strip it will snap.

Ok have fun and be super careful.

When fitting mine I have used silicone. I`ve forgot the name of it... I was making sure that I spred it (the silicone) all over the surface so it will not move when cleaning...

Immediately after fitting put some adesive tape on it to keep it tight. Something like masking tape(the stuff that painters use).

Also get a friend to give you a hand!

Good luck!

Masking tape sounds like the way to go to hold in place thanks for that, as soon as the car is back to its original colour (no snow ) i will fit the strip

The clips are pretty obvious where they should go - I drilled the tailgate & filed the holes square - the trim clips in perfectly & can be removed easily if required! :)

Ok thanks for the tip mate i will see what way is best to go when i fit...and report back, As jeff said though i dont want it cracking if someone leans on it or puts pressure on etc thats my worry :/

I just used clear bath silicone and it worked a treat, i get it free from work I'm a plumber LOL. Every body also said that the strip was ultra fragile too but i had no problems and wasn't that careful.

I tried sillycoon but it didn't go off for an age, or maybe i was too impatient :) So, where the clips go on the strip, I got some bolts, ground the heads to a square so they slotted into where the clips go, and drilled holes in the boot, popped the bolts through then tightened them with a nut from the inside of the boot, bit fiddly and had to drill a couple of holes where the bolts came through so i could get a 10mm box spanner in, but it works perfect, uses all the anchor points, much stronger than the clips, perfect snug fit, and can be easily removed at anytime :)

I bought a A 310ml cartridge of Grey Polyurethane adhesive today, product name is Terostat PU92 is this ok to bond the strip with and will the above amount be enough :/

I have a perspex trim sat in its box ready to go to bodyshop,im so paranoid about braking it i wont take it out the box lol.

  • Author

I was the same mate and very cautious when fitting, was easier than i thought though, used oem nuts etc and body kit sealant :)

Mine is the non brake light strip, but looking at it i can see the shape of a brake light am hoping i recieved a brake light perspex trim by mistake, unlikely i know but like i said wont take it out the box i really am paranoid it's ridiculous i know, note to self i must grow some balls.

  • Author

yeah mine is the non brake light, you will no by the clear strip in the middle but must open the box lol, will upload pic tomorrow

Thanks, mine looks the same but i could see the outline of a brake light within the tinted strip it's not dead smooth as i thought thats what confused me and believe me it does't take much.Given box to bodyshop hope to get tailgate back soon, should tidy the rear end up nicely.

ahhh yeah i see what your saying, yes it does have an indent even on the one without the brake light only difference being the clear window on the other version :)
